Full EXIF under LinuxFor anyone else out there that runs linux. Hope this scratches an itch.
The gimp, imagemagick etc etc deals with EXIF quite fine... however... if you are exif crazy like me i have found a tool which is great. I have put it on my website if you want to download the source: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ simple to build from source.... perl Makefile.PL make make test make install voila... take a look at the command for all the switches... Example output below. Used the -g tag to get 'all' exif info.... as you can see it covers absolutely everything.... have a look at the Lens section.. tells you exactly which lens you used.. ---- ExifTool ---- ExifTool Version Number : 3.71 ---- File ---- File Name : DSC_0401.JPG File Size : 859KB File Type : JPG Image Width : 3008 Image Height : 2000 ---- EXIF ---- Make : NIKON CORPORATION Camera Model Name : NIKON D70 Orientation : Horizontal (normal) Software : The Gimp Date/Time Of Last Modification : 2004:05:15 19:56:03 Y Cb Cr Positioning : Centered Tv(Shutter Speed) : 1/125 Av(Aperture Value) : 5.6 Exposure Program : Unknown (0) Exif Version : 0221 Shooting Date/Time : 2004:05:15 19:51:24 Date/Time Of Digitization : 2004:05:15 19:51:24 Components Configuration : YCbCr Exposure Compensation : 0 Max Aperture Value : 5.7 Metering Mode : Multi-segment Flash : Auto, Fired, Return detected Focal Length : 50.0mm User Comment : Sub Sec Time : 80 Sub Sec Time Original : 80 Sub Sec Time Digitized : 80 Flashpix Version : 0100 Color Space : sRGB Exif Image Width : 3008 Exif Image Length : 2000 Sensing Method : One-chip color area File Source : Digital Camera Scene Type : Directly photographed CFA Pattern : Custom Rendered : Normal Exposure Mode : Auto Digital Zoom Ratio : 1 Focal Length In 35mm Format : 75 Scene Capture Type : Standard Gain Control : None Contrast : Normal Saturation : Normal Sharpness : Normal Subject Distance Range : Unknown (0) Interoperability Index : R98 Interoperability Version : 0100 Compression : JPEG (old-style) X Resolution : 72 Y Resolution : 72 Resolution Unit : inches Thumbnail Offset : 2357 Thumbnail Length : 8604 ---- MakerNotes ---- File System Version : 2.00 ISO Used : 200 Quality : FINE White Balance : AUTO Focus Mode : AF-S Flash Setting : NORMAL Flash Type : Built-in,TTL White Balance Fine Tune : 0 Color Balance 1 : 2.176e+04 2.688e+04 0 0 Thumbnail Image IFD : 1395 FEC : 0.0 ISO Setting : 200 Image Boundry : 0 0 49163 53255 Tone Comp : AUTO Lens : 18 50 3.5 5.6 AF Point : Single Area, Center Color Hue : MODE3a Light Source : SPEEDLIGHT Hue Adjustment : 0 Noise Reduction : OFF Red Balance : 7.00000 Blue Balance : 7.00000 Serial Number : NO= 20003d21 Shutter Count : 607 Vari Program : CLOSE ASC ---- Composite ---- Av(Aperture Value) : 5.6 Image Size : 3008x2000 Scale Factor To 35mm Equivalent : 1.5 Tv(Shutter Speed) : 1/125 Thumbnail Image : (Binary data 8604 bytes, use -b option to extract) Focal Length : 50.0mm (35mm equivalent: 75.0mm) Last edited by xerubus on Fri Mar 04, 2005 8:05 pm, edited 1 time in total.

will this work for images that have been through photoshop ? (wich still have some exif data in them.)
i always run the ISO fix tool on my images, which takes the nikon proprietary ISO field and puts into the standard ISO field that all other cameras use in exif headers )so that my gallery could read the ISO basically.)
yes it does... if you have a look towards the top of the exif posted above you can see that it has been edited with the gimp... same applied for photoshop..
very useful tool cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
mmm got a copy of it ? ;

aparently have lost power at home... been off too long for the ups
will be back online when i get home tonight. the link is also wrong.. i bought a new domain name. Here's the updated address once the servers are back online: http://www.nikonaustralia.com/Image-Exi ... .71.tar.gz if you need it quicker, just grab it from here: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
sweet as, works a treat
too bad my gallery cant integrate this easily. (im sure i could hack the php enough to call on exiftool instead of jhead though.) http://darb.net/
gallery is simple to hack around with.. would be very easy to do...
when i get home i'll make my gallery install use exiftool and let you know. cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
yueh ive hacked my own gallery quite a bit to make it look and feel how i want it. bit of a pain at upgrade time but usually takes me about an hour to rehack all the things i wanted changed. (subtle, but extra colour fields beyond the standard css controls, omiting some things, changing layout / talbe sizes, stopping word wrapping, added some http info at the bottom of the main page, etc etc.)
http://darb.net/
Yeah... I've done some hacks and dont want to muck around much either...
But I will probably do what you have done with the EXIF under the pic... I like that... New page

That download link isn't working anymore but I think I found the original site anyway: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ - looks very neat... I might try adding it to my gallery application...
Thanks for the heads up xerubus
no problems mate... and sorry... i removed it from the download section... will replace the url with the link above... btw.... a big welcome to the forum mate.... enjoy.
cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
ive also got a script, that im sure some of you are aware of, that stamps jpegs with selective exif data, and copyright in photoshop CS, part of post processing actions ;
Full Image : http://darb.net/assorted-personal/DSC_5811?full=1 I apply them to my full res originals as kind of like a "serial number" if you will. Of course, the exif headers are still intact and gallery reads headers out too, but i like branding the actual image. (i think i do anyway.) ps, im off to this lake again this weekend, camping and wakeboarding by the lake, 32 degrees, peeeerfeect. photoshop doesn't work too great under *nix
... that being said... it's a handy script. http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
rumour has it that the next version of crossover will include pscs ability... which could be a big step for *nix...

Indeed...
But I have found a raw plug in for GIMP (viewraw) New page

nice....
i use dcdraw (http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/) when in nix.... pscs when tied to a windoze box... http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
Thanks for the warm welcome xerubus I've been lurking far too long so I decided I should finally post something now that I've got a spare moment... I just realised that I completely missed the post where you already gave the full URL to the site Bit of a long week at work I guess... TGIF! Darb: That looks like a handy script, particularly if you are ever displaying your photos on a system that doesn't have EXIF reading abilities or even on a forum like this... I must look into photoshop batching/scripting more. I assume it wouldn't be too hard to have a transparent watermark logo applied to all your shots? Looks like a nice spot you're heading to. Have fun and get lots of shots! Cheers, Stephen
