Some Nikon 70-200 VRII shots

I have never used the VRI so I can't say if this is better or not. I can tell you that it has lightning fast focus, and looks like it will easily be my favourite lens.
All shots were handheld.

Nikon D300 for all shots.
1) Focal Length 200 mm, ISO 200, Shutter Speed 1/4000s, Aperture F2.8, Aperture Priority.
2) Focal Length 200 mm, ISO 200, Shutter Speed 1/6000s, Aperture F2.8, Aperture Priority.
3) Focal Length 200 mm, ISO 200, Shutter Speed 1/2000s, Aperture F2.8, Aperture Priority.

All I need now it to find out it works well with the Teleconverters. Early reports are that it does.

Although not really knowing the technique, that surf shot really shows the speed of the AF - that also looks like it might have hurt a bit...

I think you get a balaclava, put it on your head, go into the bank, wave a replica pistol around and wait for someone to come up and give you some money. In this heat it's obviously not practicable to weat a balaclava outside, so I think the go wold be to wear a sign "don't look at me, disable your auto-focus" into the bank and put the balaclava on when you've cooled down sufficiently. Can't say I've ever done it myself, though.

Beautiful imagery here, love the colors of and composition of the third. ! I doubt this is much to do with this particular lens.[shutter speed is too high for VR to be helpful] I am sure the mark 1 would have been just as good. [or am I very very wrong here?; hey if I am not, you will save $1500 ]

you think ? hmmm...i gotta be honest here, they look pretty soft to me. there's also a heck of alot of noise in that bird shot. not sure why that is, maybe a large crop ??

is it worth it? cant the VR1 do the job? VR1 is not an obsolete lens but some stores in hong kong no longer carries the latter instead they keep on pushing for the VRII. can anyone redirect me to threads with VRI sample shots. i need more convincing in getting the VRII.

Actually, I believe that it is.

The reason that stores will be "pushing" the VRII lens is because that is what is now being made by Nikon, and you will find that the older lens is no longer in production.

None of which means that the older lenses are bad. the older 70-200 VR was very highly regarded, and from the images we are seeing here, its replacement is going to be an even better lens.

The older lens became unobtianium in Australia (from Nikon Australia) a few months ago, just before the new VR II was announced. Nothing wrong with the older lens, esp if you are using DX. I will hang onto mine for now...maybe go to the newer version when I go FX...maybe not. Love my 70-200VR!

From what i've seen from the various Scott Kelby podcasts i watch VR/IS should be turned off with shutter speeds of 1000th or above.

Lovely sharp images, particularly considering it's at F/2.8, would love to see the sharpness at f/5.6 and f/8
I think you're right Wink about not using VR in the higher shutter speeds (not that you'd need it anyway )

Correct VR will not help with fast shutter speeds and may actually work against you. Where it shines is at speeds less than 1 over the focal length i.e at anyhting slower than 1/200th of a second and they really come into their own at 1/30th of a second or less. None the less great shots and I am glad that you are enjoying this wonderful new aquisition.
