Some Juiced Up B&W's

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Some Juiced Up B&W's

Hi All,

Just some stuff I'm putting up for constructive critique and opinion.

While i was out with Aim54x and a friend (Jod) we decided to hang out in the city for a good ol fashion shoot em up.
All taken with the 7D and 70-200 f4L USM , and post processed, most have had grain added in post process, would like to hear people's opinion.

Hi Marcus,

As a concept, I like the idea of what you've done, but I'm not sure that the conversions to B&W do the concept justice. What I'm seeing here reminds me of the good old days of film, but of when something had gone wrong with the film in the camera and it had become slightly fogged.

I'd like to see the contrast in these images given a significant boost, because to me, they don't really look like great B&W images.

But I believe that they could.

On a couple of the individual images, I like the fact that in the first image the horizon is not level. I think that adds to the interest created in this image, with the obvious traffic and city mayhem.

The third image ... I'm wondering if a square crop might help this. The issue that I see is that the people are all over on the rh side of the frame, and moving (apparently) further towards the right and thus out of the frame. The negative space on the lh side doesn't actually add anything to this image and might be able to be cropped out. Might - I'm not sure. I think that it would have been far better to have the negative space towards the right, where the people could have been moving into it ... but of course these thoughts are easy for me to offer in hindsight. :)

Both one and three have potential but need improvements in the b&w conversion to achieve more impact.
I quite like that the third has an offest focal point so don't entirely agree with Gary on the square crop.
For me... two and four lack for subject matter interest.

Images #1 and #3 have a nice sense of drama about them and work for me. The other 2 do not. I personally like this style of photography but you need to be sure you have a subject to begin with. Try asking yourself "What am I taking a photograph of?"...If you can't answer the question decisively then probably you need to re-frame the image.

I agree that the first and third are the pick of the bunch, also agree with the comments regarding the negative space is requirted on the RH side of image 3.

The conversions do suit the subjects and the lighting.
