A few places are stating Feb release at £2800. That's $4900AUD... Surely not!

Just like it's nikon counterpart, I am not sure how they will improve on this lens. it's already extremely good.

Maybe faster AF.

Maybe just the wallet exploding price.

It does have new, quicker and quieter AF which i believe only the new 1D and 7D can currently take full advantage of.
It's bigger and heavier. Not by much though.
The MFD is reduced slightly and magnification is up a little.

As you said, the original is extremely good. I'm sure a lot of people will upgrade and even order a replacement unseen and untested.

Will the difference be noticeable and worth the (potential) extra price? That will be the question.

I didn't think it was available until April but i saw it on the Ted's website lastnight for $3499.95, normally $3799.95.

The only one it will have any affect on is the older 70-200mm f/2.8 IS and there is already a large enough gap in the pricing (on the australian market ~$3000-$2800 vs ~$3800 ($3500 on sale)) so I dont think there will be much movement there unless retailers get a bit happy and start discounting.

The US retail price is $2499. The AU price just doesn't add up.
