Camera insurance..

Hi Guys..

Its tha time of year again and I need to re insure my kit and am wondering if anyone has any good recommendations as to who they insure with?.. I have had my kit insured with a travel insurance company for the last few years as it covered me for trips oversea's etc but I find them extremely pricey (although I didn't have any problems when I needed to make a claim a year ago so I can't whine too much)... anyway I thought that there might be a cheaper option out there for me instead of the one I have been using.. Obviously the camera get used a lot and in lots of different conditions so it would need to also be covered for accidents as well as theft etc.. and it would be preferable if it was covered for oversea's trips too (although I suspect thats pushing it)..

Sorry Bindii, I haven't noticed if you are pro or not, so this might be irrelevant if you are...

I rang my home insurer and added all my gear as specified extras to the contents policy. They were very helpful, and the gear is covered anywhere I might take it, no questions. Of course, they had a rate per $'000 that was added to the policy.

We also have ours insured as part of home and contents - with Elders Insurance. They are then covered for upto 90 days anywhere in the world.

It added to the policy, but was a lot cheaper than other insurance options

Thanks guys.. I'm probably for insurance purposes classified as a pro (abn number, registered business etc) so I take it that Elders won't help me then Tom?.. I'll call our home and contents insurer and ask if they have anything that suits me maybe?

i did it with my gear, (AAMI), about 6 months ago. just added as specified items on my policy, (in and out of the home). i though the chick on the phone was gonna have kittens when i told her for how much. i cant recall the exact price increase on my policy but i do recall it was reasonably pricey, depending of course on how much gear you have. in saying that though, i did get a quote from http://www.photoinsurance.com.au/ who insure photography gear for pro's and this was more expensive. of course they have to take into consideration that your gear is more susceptible to theft, loss or damage.

i was totally honest with AAMI and told them that i used the camera most weekends for paid photography but that it was not my primary source of income or my main job. they were fine with that.

needless to say make sure you keep receipts if possible, or at the very least, photos of every item in your kit as evidence should you ever need to claim.

Try Aaon. They have specific camera insurance and camera insurance friendly brokers for pro's. We like many others on the forum use them and while I'm yet to make a claim with them (touch wood) not seen any bad reviews about them on these forums todate.

I'm with http://www.photoinsurance.com.au/ and have been for about 6 months now.

Nothing but positive experiences with them. Their price was by far the cheapest for me, which included worldwide travel, and their policy was what I needed. I've never had to claim though.

If I ever need to add items to the list, I email the lady I deal with, and have a response and updated policy within a day usually.

Very happy customer.
And if your with the AIPP, (and I think ACMP) you get a discount.

That will keep me busy for a bit now comparing all the policies and costs etc! I appreciate the help its saved me loads of time raking through the phone book calling random insurance companies..
