Viewing NEF thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Postby leek on Sat Mar 05, 2005 5:18 pm

IF you use Windows XP, and IF you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may be experiencing a problem that Windows Explorer does not display thumbnails for NEF files...

IF you have this problem, it can be fixed by downloading and installing the Nikon supplied fix from this location...

Birddog, I noticed this problem on your PC today, so you may want to install the fix... Of course if you use Nikon View exclusively, then it may not bother you...

Hope this helps someone...
Cheers, John

The Nikon solution doesn't work too well. I used it on my second PC and was immediately sorry. The images were very poor.
A better solution is discussed in the following post at Rob Galbraith:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=265823&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=186

And here is the link to the registry fix, which was written by a Microsoft engineer:

I think this has been raised in the forum before, but I haven't located the thread yet.

Win2K + NEF thumbnails

Postby christiand on Sat Mar 05, 2005 7:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I've lost the ability to view NEF thumbnails
on my Win2K PC.
I don't know what I've done to it.
I've uninstalled Nikon View 6.2.3 and installed
Nikon View 6.2.5 however that didn't make a difference.

Any ideas ?

Cheers

I am another for whom the Nikon thumbnails fix does not work - on three computers running WinXP SP2. I use Shaun Ivory's fix - quick, clean and simple.

Cheers

Great - thanks guys! I didn't even know that there was a fix for this. I just assumed that NEF files were unshowable in windows.

hmm, I have XP SP2 installed but I havent needed to install any fixes, the NEF thumbs display just fine for me. I dont have Nikon View installed, it seemed like a waste of HD space to me ;)
