Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRBlasphemy!! talking about compact camera sensors and even worse Sony products!!
I have just received my Sony Cyber-Shot TX5 (ducks from missiles) and will be throwing this camera and its Exmor R (backlit CMOS) against my Fujifilm F100fd (and its SuperCCD HR) to see how the technology stacks up. But before I post some results (if there is some interest) I just thought i would ask to see what people think, which will win. This is also a shout out to anyone with a SuperCCD EXR (Fuji's newest sensor) to see if I can borrow their camera and test as well. I will forgo the controlled light tests but opt for some side by side real world shooting for this one. Why? These technologies (especially Exmor R) will eventually be used in DSLR sized sensors (hopefully) so I thought i would have a look at how they stack up in the cameras available today. Cameron

Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRWould love see some real world results Cameron. I don't know what these sensors are but keen to hear where the technology is heading.
Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXR
I will def post up some results soon....I took my TX5 (10.2mp Exmor R) and my Fujifim F100fd (12mp SuperCCD HR - 2yr old tech) out tonight and the results were interesting. I'll try to find some links about the tech and link them up to this thread. Cameron

Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRAt the risk of being attacked again for being a mindless cosumer bought by marketing hype (see here) I thought i would post some info about the sensors that i am looking at here. i have chosen to use marketing material as it explains things in a manner that is understandable yet accurate and is hopefully written by people that understand the technology (rather than speculation).
SuperCCD EXR - Fujifilm.com http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/exr/index.html Exmor R - Sony Global http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/technology/technology/theme/exmor_r_01.html I have not really been able to find anything on the SuperCCD HR other than a Wiki that is not huge help, but does reference some dpreview links of press releases from Fujifilm of older generation SuperCCD sensors and has a nice diagram of the older SuperCCD pixel layout. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_CCD I will email Fujifilm and Sony to see if I can get more information on these sensors and will provide any links that I get. Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXR
It explains it better than I can....if you want I will post technical documents (initial requests sent to both Fuji and Sony) and patents as i receive and find them. Cameron

Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRi dont know how sony's R sensor perfroms in compacts but from what i read about its performane in their video cameras, it leaves alot to be desired.

Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRSorry guys, I am currently very much under the weather, and will try to do a few more shots with both my F100fd and the TX5 before I assemble a good comparison between the two.
As for the performance of the Exmor R in compacts, the TX5 is a lot better than the WX1 that I played with last year. Cameron

Re: Exmor R vs SuperCCD/SuperCCD EXRI just thought I would share some pics....click through for full res stuff.
Fuji F100fd (SuperCCD HR - 2008) @ 800 ISO, 1/120, f/5.1 Sony DSC-TX5 (Exmor R - 2010) @ 800 ISO, 1/30, f/4.5 It is a shame about the different exposures (damn auto!!) and the different magnifications (I was using the Fuji and my gf was using the Sony), but the Fuji definitely retains better detail whereas the Sony smudges the detail (look at the face). Fuji F100fd @ 200 ISO, 1/30, f/4 Sony DSC-TX5 @ 200 ISO, 1/60, f/4 (I suspect this one may be a Backlight HDR mode shot) Nikon D60 @ 100 ISO, 1/60, f/3.5 Closer in exposure, but the first thing you will notice is the difference in exposure bias, the sony goes for shadow detail whilst the fuji opts to retain highlights. I have added the Nikon D60 in for kicks. I was most amazed to see how similar the F100fd behaves to the Nikon D60. Also notice the difference in how the RealPhoto (Fuji), Bionz (Sony) and Expeed (Nikon) processors deal with the colours (green). Cameron
