Profile Shot for Fiancee

Hi All,

So my best mate let me borrow his lighting gear as he's in the UK--Bless his cotton socks -- and I also got a new Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 as I was bemoaning the fact that I didn't have a lens to cover that focal length.
(Note that I did buy it new for $186 or something on eBay... total bargin!)

So before we headed to a wedding. I set up the gear and got my beautiful fiancee to model for me.

She had glasses so it took quite a while to figure out how to take the shot without the strobes reflecting harshly back from the glasses.

I had 2 sunpak 383 strobes at about 2 meters distance with shoot through umbrellas directed at her from 45 degree angles to her wirelessly triggered.

As these were my first real shots with the new Tammy and the lighting gear.I was very happy with the preformance of the lens for the price.

hardly normal were selling these with a genuine 2yr Australian warranty (from Maxwell) for $199 over christmas, so I hope you did get one with a Tamron Australia warranty card.

Great work on controlling the reflections off her glasses, but the whole shot looks a bit yellow to me (someone on a calibrated screen will be better able to inform you)

how about, just for kicks and giggles, try a high key style on it? I reckon it may just work out quite well...

I would prefer some more shadows to define her face a little. Was the background yellow (urine coloured?)? If so, the white balance looks a ok on my screen. If you click the white eye dropper on the yellow background, then it seems to balance the picture a little by making it very white...

I think there is a problem of colors here. A darker background to bring out her light hair and a less overwhelming top would make a better head shot.

I would move one light to the background and use another for the subject.

Nicely done with the glasses.

I agree with the white balance comments, I prefer it less yellow. May I ask why she is even wearing her glasses? If it was so difficult to avoid the reflected lights, then just leave them off - that would avoid them interfering with her Right eye as well.

I think you achieved a very nice result with that lens. Dial out just a little yellow but otherwise very good image. You have captured her in a way that reveals her beauty and intelligence....she's a good model. Perhaps the purple is a little over kill. Go for more muted colours in future....whites, grays with fine checks etc.

I read that the general rule of thumb with glasses and portraits is that if a person wears glasses for more than 80% of their day (aside when they sleep of course) you should take the portrait with the glasses on.

Otherwise, it really wouldn't be a portrait of her as she's ALWAYS got those glasses on

Thanks for the heads up on the yellowness.
The background is a curtain which has a slight yellow tinge to it.

I think that I'll have to do some work with the colours
