Don't take it for granted that your D70 in its "stalled" state has a faster framerate than the guy next to you in his flashy Canon 20D (5FPS is no use if the 'stall barrier' is there too).

After playing with Nikon Boys D2H and seeing that baby do 8FPS continous (no stalling), I feel that something like the D2X would be ideal for motorsports, extreme sports and air shows.
Kipper,
Get you self good CF card, something like SanDisk Ultra II, and you'll be surprised - my D70 doesn't stall. It does continous 3fps and with good modern CF card washes stack out very quickly. With older card that I've got (Ridata 1Gb) it stalls like you described

Hilop,
He has the Sandisk Ultra II! and it's the nature of the D70 and it's worst on the D100 once you come with the buffer in continuously shooting in RAW.

I don't know what's wrong then. I was disapointed myself when I found how slow my D70 with older card then someone advised me to buy better CF. I've bought Ultra II and problem was solved. I didn't fill whole card but I did shot about 40 frames contnously for test. Was more than happy with that

I have the early Kingmax 30x CF card and shoot 8fps on the D2h, 40 frames continuously and the D2h is not stalled.

I suppose D2h has bigger cache

Spot on! same as the D2x with more buffer to handle the 25% more than the D2h.
The 45x Astone or Transcend does equal job on the D70 as the Sandisk Ultra II, won't notice the difference.
The D2 series can handle far better way than the D100 or the D70. That what people paid for.

Mikhail,
Are you shooting raw or jpg? My guess is jpg, and in that mode, Kipper's camera won't stall either. Getting a card that's faster than 45x is of no consequence whatsoever; the issue is that he's bumping into the camera's limits.

Gary,
Sorry to tell you that but you're wrong I'm shooting RAW only

I just thought that there maight be another source of problem. If we're shoting some frames and then deleting number of images then we're facing FAT file system limitation and it's slowing writing process down.
I'm formatting CF card before each photo session and not deleting any pics in camera, so, camera writes them one by one without jumping back and forth through the filesystem

I had a compaq once that had a 256 and a 124 in it and when it wasn't working very well I took it in to a guy who told me that this particular model doesn't really like odd numbers of ram. So he recommended 2 256, or 2 512's or something, but not anythinig. It made sense to me and so I took out the 124 and sure enough it worked better without it. Might help.

Yeah, at the Melb Meet we did a few tests to prove it's the D70.
We had NikonBoys D2H, PlatinumWeavers and my D70. We switched to continuous in RAW. Both D70s stall after 4-5 shots when the buffer is full. The D2H did the job and didn't stall at all (I know it's only 4MP, that's why I'd like to see a D2X in action). We then switched the D70s to JPEG Fine/Large and it didn't stall at 3FPS. Verdict, the D70s buffer is too stall and the data pipeline/bus to the CF might be too small, not the most optimum?

The buffer of the D2h is nearly 3 times of the D70 and the D2x is more of it.
To shoot sport or fast moving subjects with D70, focus is slow and hard to lock them in, the D2h serves the best in this area and hopefully the D2x will do its best.

In that case, Mikhail, I would really like to see that performance realised in person. It defies the stated specifications of the camera, and it defies Nikon's own claims for the camera.
Putting it another way, if the camera were capable of this performance, Nikon would surely be stating it in their marketing blurbs, but yet they do not.
