Buyer beware

Postby stubbsy on Sun Mar 28, 2010 12:00 pm

While looking around for prices on a Nikon D700 camera I came across this little gem.

D700 body only (OZ SELLER, SHIP FROM SYDNEY, NO CUSTOM TAX, GET FAST) on ebay (see it HERE) for the amazing price of $4,099.88. It has "Nikon HK 12-month warranty" so it's a grey import. By comparison the same camera, genuine Australian stock with 2 year Nikon Australia warranty can be had for $3,395 at ECS or grey for $2,999 at d-d photographics. That's over $1,000 price difference.

Guess there's a sucker born every minute.
Peter

It's on eBay, so it must be a bargain.

:)

Thanks for the timely warning, Peter.

Ebay is dreadful these days. The Ebay management seem to have lost control of scammers.

It's rather funny until you look to the right of the listing details and see "2 sold"....

Caveat emptor indeed.

What's worse is his feedback - ok, only 2 negative, but look at the neutral ...
"was supposed to be Oz stock, but shipped from HongKong " - so not only expensive, but false advertising to boot :(, and apparantly, they do this a fair bit !
Wish there was something we could do about sellers like this - but I don't suppose there is ??

The two sales on that particular listing were from last year, dunno when it came out or how accessible it was here, but I wonder if the D700 was new then and hard to find?

On the false location thing, I bought my 18-200mm VRII from a supposedly Australian-based seller who took a week to ship it from Hong Kong. I'd specifically paid more to buy 'local' so that I would get it sooner.. ended up taking my trip without the lens and waiting another 2 weeks for it after my return! I think all we can do realistically though is either vote with our dollars and right to choose in the first place, and/or report via feedback in the second. :x
