Glebe Tram Sheds

Couple friends and I decided to check out the glebe tram sheds on Saturday. Pretty eerie place but filled with great photo oppotunities.

Looks like a fair bit of history there and many wonderful photographic opportunities.

That place looks awesome, where exactly is it? should I ask about how you got access?

The pictures look great, i would like to see more with leading lines to give them a less flat look. The straight on images give that 2d flat appearance. Great colours though, contrast that with the bleak surroundings and you have some winning compositions!

I am keen to check this place out now

The sheds were next to harold parkway, on Chapman Road Glebe/Annandale.

I'm sobbing away here because I'm from Melbourne and I love my trams.

It amazes me that the Powehouse Museum or someone similar hasn't made arrangements to store them more securely. I'm guessing it won't be long before they are lost forever to a fire...

What also amazes me is that I lived in Glebe for 5+ years as a kid, and I never knew they were there!

While doing a bit of research of the historical significance of this place, I fail to find when the trams stopped operating. Do anybody know?

Partially to make way for the Sydney Opera House. Bennelong Point was previously used as a tram shed, with trams running up most of Sydney's north/south roadways.

The needed to location for the Opera House, and so the trams needed to go.

I can (barely) remember catching trams along College St back out along Oxford and Flinders Sts, and then onto Anzac Pde. The bus roadway on the Eastern side of Anzac Pde, and the large centre strip along Anzac Pde between Kingsford an La Perouse was actually the tramway.

As much as I love the SOH, I do believe that we have truly lost something.

1961 rings a bell with me.
Like Gary I have a few vague memories of them from my childhood. It can't be much later or I would remember them more clearly

The system was in place from 1879 until its winding down in the 1950s and closure in 1961.

# Ultimo Depot served routes to Pyrmont, Ryde, and Erskineville. It was situated on the eastern side of Harris St adjacent to the Darling Harbour goods railway. It closed as a tram depot in 1953, becoming a bus depot, which later closed.
