Nikon Learn and ExploreSeveral months ago Nikon produced an app for the iPhone named Nikon Learn and Explore, but it was only available for US iPhone users. I've just been advised that it is now available to Aussie iPhone users, and I would recommend that anyone with an interest in photography go and download a copy.
The US version was free; I don't know if that has changed with the more general availability of it. "What is the app though?" I hear you ask. I'm glad you asked. It's a series of images with explanations as to how the images were made, with "lessons" explaining various photographic concepts and techniques. While produced by Nikon USA, its scope goes well beyond the Nikon realm, and I think that any photographer would find it useful to have on their iPhone. g.

Please let me know what you think. And also, any others who DL it, please let me know via a response in this thread. g.

Re: Nilon Learn and ExploreInitial reaction, there is a lot of content, the couple of articles I have read have varied in quality but overall good.
The content appears to be dynamic in that it has already downloaded three new articles. This will keep the app fresh and stop it getting relegated to page 9 with the apps I occasionally look at! Will update more after I have had a chance to really go through it. edit: quick edit, it is definitely not Nikon specific although it does have a Nikon bias. Re: Nilon Learn and ExploreI don't have an iPhone but the app works just fine on my iPod Touch It might be good for the iPad, too.
Looks pretty good. Seems to be mostly opinions of photographers which is always a good perspective to have. While none of the advice is "correct", none of it is "incorrect" either, but is great to consider as part of your repertoire.
Re: Nilon Learn and ExploreAndrew,
Good point; thanks for pointing out that aspect. I tend to overlook the fact that the apps can work on other devices as well.
Again, yes, and thanks. I should mention that to Leigh: guess what he's been playing with today?
Exactly my PoV here, and why I'm suggesting that it's useful beyond the Nikon realm. You can never have too many techniques and skills to draw upon. g.

Re: Nikon Learn and ExploreNow all I need is a *free* iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad for it to be truly free

Re: Nikon Learn and Explore
By that logic, I need a free D700 so that my copies of ViewNX are also truly free. g.

Re: Nikon Learn and Explore
Nope. Because you don't need a d700 to run ViewNX. I use ViewNX with my D200. Pam uses it with her D70s Nice try though Greg

Re: Nilon Learn and Explore
OK. Looks like it won't work on the iPad at the moment. I bit the bullet today and restored my iPod from backup, so I could sync my apps. (Bloody Apple in their infinite wisdom don't allow for you to replace your PC/Mac or even rebuild it, which means that when you do, your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad is no longer recognised and you have to blow everything away and start from scratch. You can backup and restore so you don't actually lose anything, other than the layout of your apps). Anyway, back to the subject. Now that I have the apps synced, they are grouped in iTunes as: * iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad Apps * iPhone and iPod Touch Apps * iPad Apps Nikon Learn and Explore is in the second category which suggests it isn't for the iPad. I suspect that might just mean that it isn't formatted for the iPad because at the launch Apple claimed "150,000 apps at your fingertips. From day one" and they could only make that claim based on the existing apps in the App Store, most of which won't be formatted for the iPad. So, I guess it will run, but won't look very good.
Re: Nikon Learn and ExploreThanks for the heads up on this. It is a really useful app even for us Canon users!!!

Re: Nikon Learn and ExploreLooks like a great resource on first glance. Lots of material to go through and interesting to read the articles from the photographer's perspective.

Re: Nikon Learn and ExploreI've recently installed this on my iPod touch, and was quite pleased by the material, I agree, its not correct, nor is it incorrect, but the advice does let people freshen up and get back to the basics. Though one criticism is that without wifi I can't view the tutorial pics or videos. But it's pretty awesome how they have Joe McNally showing off lighting
