Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre: June 2010

Am heading up that way for most of a fortnight next month (just after PMA in fact). I'm keeping an eye on the Lake Eyre Yacht Club's info about water levels and the road conditions report.
There are a few threads on the forum from discussions about trips up that way in 2009, but nothing this year. Is anyone else considering taking a look?

My plan is to head up via the Flinders Ranges to Maree, and spend a couple of days around Maree/William Creek (including a flight out over the lake) before heading up to the Painted Desert and then back home via Coober Pedy. I'll be sharing my car and campsite with another photographer friend, and we've timed it to match the new moon so we can do some more star-trail work. Anyone else heading outback soon?

Looks like you'll get some reasonable water, with it being visable at the moment from both spots we got to on the lake last year (our route was similar to yours, except we continued up to the Alice and Ayers Rock before returning to Coober Pedy and the Painted Desert).

Will be great to see the pics! Try to get some star trails over the Painted Desert - that'd be cool

I am doing the largest ever outback photo shoot very soon (4 months away now).

A rough idea: (Taken from the AcrossOz website)

Covering six weeks and some 12,000 kilometres, the journey will begin from the Sunshine Coast trekking due west; from sunrise to sunset everyday. From Poeppel’s Corner, then heading south down the famous Birdsville track, then north via the equally famous Oodnadatta track before setting west again past Uluru and then onto the Gunbarrel Highway.

Upon reaching the most westerly point in Australia, the gig will head south, through Perth and Margaret River before turning east again along the Nullabor Plain.

From there it is across inland NSW, taking advantage of the many unsealed roads, logging tracks and wayward destinations before finally turning from home once the Queensland border is crossed. Whilst an approximate route has been planned, it is expected that some 60% of the journey be on unsealed roads – and diversionary explorations will be the norm instead of a set general route - a true adventure in every sense!

I'll be back home by then though, so no hope of catching up on the road...
