Broken Camera

Not my DSLR but the mother in laws, Panasonic Lumix LZ2.

The camera operates in all respects in regards to displaying menu options, focusing and shutter actuation etc. the problem is that the image you are trying to capture cannot be seen, all you have is a black screen overlayed with the selected shutter/aperture/focus mode. A press of the shutter button, actuates the shutter and a image is recorded and saved to the SD card. The problem is that the image recorded is also just a black void.

My suspicion is a faulty sensor and therefore probably not economical to repair, any other suggestions/advice others can offer would be appreciated.

The camera is about 2 years old, and has done very little work to be honest, I would guess around 1K images taken.

That sounds like a faulty sensor....I think you have to be a good son-in-law and buy her a new camera (it will be an expensive fix!)

I'd be tempted to take it to a camera repairer and see their reaction. They might say "oh yeah, this again" and be able to give you an estimate of the repair cost on the spot.

The one I use will charge you $35 to open and diagnose a compact camera (of course they can diagnose some problems on the spot). That fee is deducted from the final repair cost if you go ahead.

Even the crappy one here only charges you $40 for lift the bonnet so to speak. Well worth your while for a camera with so little milage. On the flip side, there are cheap models available for $150 these days.
