canon NEEDS scratchfree LENSHOODS..

Postby photomarcs on Thu Jun 24, 2010 10:27 pm

Hey guys!

I recently just purchased a new EF 24-105 f4L IS USM and am now on the hunt for a new lens hood that is like that polycarbonate material the new 70-200 IS USM or something THAT WONT SCRATCH.. ie. Tamron Lens Hoods too.

Anybody know of anywhere or anything as such for canon lenses ? I'm really beginning to hate Canon for the tacky lens hoods on the L series.. only now they've updated to the new style ( about friggin time).

Many thanks and warm regards to the fellows and fellowesses who can contribute :)

What's the problem? Have you scraped off the flocking on the inside somehow?

Hey Dave,

Your previous installment on your burrens.cv has led me to conclude a new style of lens hoods be born for Canon users. Great choice of putting the 17-55 lens hood on the 24-105 btw..

What I'm personally after is a lens hood that won't scratch on the exterior, i hate having clients look at my gear and me knowing it's battered ( lens hood evident). So was looking for an alternative lens hood.

P.S. If anyone suggests rubber lens hoods I will shoot you.

You mean this post?

So it's the outside that's an issue for you?
How can a battered hood be a bad thing in the clients' eyes? Surely if anything it just shows that it's a tool that gets used in the real world?
Sure, I can understand that using "pro" gear vs. using "consumer" gear can give different impressions to clients (even if the results are acceptable either way). But how can a battered hood be a problem?

P.S. If anyone suggests rubber lens hoods I will shoot you.

With which lens? ;)

Yeah the outside is really pissing me off..
I'm just personally not too keen on looking at my stuff and thinking, "crap.. I've treated you bad." :rotfl2: but I guess a fingerprintless and scratchresistant lens hood would solve my discomforting issues.. yeah it's purely aesthetic. lol

How about a 1200mm :rotfl2:

Well, this may not suit you but you can always revamp it with vinyl spray on paint, the sort used to respray the hard plastic interior consoles of cars. It's pretty hard wearing and can give a great finish.

You could always get a custom made one out of diamond. Anything else WILL scratch. It's a sad fact of physics that anything hard will scratch anything softer (unless it's liquid) Even diamond will scratch if you try hard enough.

Thats actually not a bad idea, I might ask some of my friends who are automotive geniuses... they can probably help me out with application too....

Mate my advice is to stop babying your equipment. Don't interpret that as 'thrash it' but simply accept that wear and tear will happen with any tools and equipment. I can totally relate how you feel cause it has happened to me during my earlier years when I first started out but now I've come to peace with it :). Also remember worrying about damaging your equipment everytime you take it out of it's super cushioned bomb proof home will affect your photography and prevent you to be more creative IMO.

Also do you really think clients at the end of the shoot remember how scratched your camera hood was or how fantastic you were directing and capturing the images?!

Also, mate, don't let this be the sole reason to dislike a manufacturer. Don't put so much emphasis on a little thing. As long as it's doing its job be happy :). Believe it or not there are always pros and cons with all camera manufacturers.

Just concentrate on your image making. :)

Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing you but I remember it happening to me and learnt that it was just a waste of time.

Marcus,

Where is the problem?

People should judge your photography by the outcomes you produce.

Do you judge a builder by the hammers he uses? A plumber by his plunger? Similarly, your camera and lenses - and accessories - are just tools of the trade.

If a lenshood gets some wear and tear ... hey, it's living!

There is a problem with diamond....think of the glare and ghosting it would cause!!

Hey dudes!

Much appreciated for the words of wisdom.. clearly I've stated things wrong as such as well.

I guess for a 19 year old to spend such hard earned money on equipment like this, I also personally don't want to see the careless treatment I sorta do to my gear :rotfl2:

but thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll walk into Swarovski crystal farms and ask them to grow a crystal lens hood LOL and this is how to waste 18 million pixels. LOL
