Cant save image as Jpeg in PS but can save in other formats

Any idea why an image exported from Lightroom 3 might not be able to be saved as a Jpeg after being worked on in PS CS2.

I can save as tiff and png but not jpeg. Says something about a program error?

Even when i close everything and reopen the tiff file it still wont let me save as jpeg.

Quite anoying - I have been trying to fix it for hours now

Convert the image to 8 bit then you will be able to save to jpg

What Jenno said. Believe me, I spent a good 30 mins at least once trying to work what was wrong with my PC for the same reason!

Unfortunately they are 8 bit at present so that wont work guys

error message is

"unfortunately could not copmplete your request due to a program error."

Interestingly when i select and copy the contents of the tiff image into a new jpeg they save fine - which gets me out of the problem.

Did this image get to PS via Lightroom? Seeing a few comments of issues when that is your worklow in the older versions but might be relevant.

Also what version of PS and anything else that image has passed through in your workflow?

EDIT: Mostly finding things re: CS2 incompatibilities. If you are mixing and matching new and old Adobe software that is probably your problem. If not, give us all the details and we can see if we can find out!

Yup it is CS2 version of PS im using.

Not all images that I export have this error (the majority dont) - but two in particular today were giving me problems

Both these would tend to suggest CS2 is your problem. I'm guessing you'll find images where you have used certain LR adjustments will cause this issue and the only real solution will be an upgrade.

That first link (the Flickr one) spells out the problem: when you use adjustments such as the local adjustment brushes in LR, that information ends up in the metadata of the resulting file (did you know that unless you strip the metadata your JPEG/PSD/TIFFs contain a copy of your RAW adjustment numbers?) and PS CS2 has a hernia when trying to save this into a JPEG.
It would be interesting to know if the problem occurs with both Save As and with Save for Web.
That Flickr thread also suggests sensible workarounds (either strip metadata when exporting from LR, or use PS's File Info to remove the offending metadata).

I never used LR2 at the same time as CS2, but even if I did I would probably not have hit the problem. I send files out as PSD or TIFF to PS, and the work ends up as a layered file back in the LR catalog. Then if I'm generating JPEGs I'm usually doing it directly from LR (sometimes using the LR/Mogrify plug-in to add borders/etc).

CS5 can now save 16 bit files as JPEG. It will do the conversion automatically.
LR3 and CS5 work really well together.
