Op Tech Dual Harness

Postby Alpha_7 on Tue Jul 13, 2010 1:02 pm

I was doing a bit of looking around for additional gear for the upcoming trip to Antarctica and am flirting with the idea of one of these dual harnesses from Optech and I plan to shoot two bodies. I was wondering if anyone has one, or has tried one to give any personal feedback ?

Craig, you could have just asked on the Antarctic forum site. Guess who has one. :)
I've been using Op/Tech straps for years so all my gear has the attachments.

I've been using it here under a coat and it works quite well, including in populated areas. But I might not use it in a foreign city I wasn't completely comfortable in (in case of pick-pockets/etc I tend to go much lower-key and have very heightened situational awareness).

For use in the cold it might be awkward. You'd want it over your coat, but you'd have to take it off when wearing a lifejacket and vice versa. There is limited configuration of the strap length, and you don't want a camera banging on rocks/ground if you kneel down. So definitely don't get the long version even if you're tall.

For normal Op/Tech straps I've got Pro, Super Classic, and Classic straps. On my previous polar trips with two bodies I've used the Pro and Super Classic straps to simply sling two bodies around my neck (adjusted so they're slightly different lengths to avoid clashes). This has worked well.

I also have a Kirk SS-1 strap (attaches to an Arca-Swiss plate) which I've used for years over my left shoulder (under a jacket/vest to avoid it slipping off) or diagonally across my neck to carry my 100-400 with camera (and sometimes flash) attached.
Recently I got a BlackRapid RS-7 to which I've attached a Kirk clamp, so it can quickly attach to all my camera bodies (and the 100-400). I've been experimenting with using this paired with the SS-1 to carry two cameras.
With the straps that attach to the A-S plate I am able to attach it to the side of the L-plate, which is a very useful orientation for grab-n-shoot work.

In the end I've got a few options. Not sure if I'm going to take the Dual Harness in November though.
I'll be interested to see comments from any other Dual Harness users!

Haha that was my second point of call, I thought I'd hit more photographers here, and I'm pretty sure someone where has some kind of harness system.

I have a Cotton Carrier harness. I haven't used it for a while. I'll have to assess how suitable it is myself.
