Recently went to take some sunset and sunrise photos at Minimurra (Kiama) but both times the clouds were too strong and blocked the strong red and orange colours from coming through, although I took the opportunity to take some long exposures and the nice texture and shape of the sky. This was taken around 7am but the sun was blocked by rain clouds out in the sea. (my favourite one) This was taken facing more south east while the others are more north east, so it has a more eerie mystical feel to it. This was taken late afternoon.

This is a great set, even without the sun and its warm tones.
#1 has great fore/middle/background features that lead you through the image, there may even be enough tonality for an effective B&W treatment. #2 really has an eerie feel...I really like this one, probably my favourite of the bunch #3 I like the wash, but this is the week link, there seems to be less "feel" to the image and it is compositionally weaker than #1.
Hope you had heaps of fun, and I am looking forward to seeing these with the sun...so get back out there!

I really like the first, -great clouds and the headland just gives point of focus to redirect the eye back in after checking out all the rocks.
Is this looking towards bombo toothbrush/headland?

This place looks awesome, all those rocks, interestign ones at that, provide some really great foregrounds!
I really like the first, the foreground is great an dthe composition just leads me right up to the headland - on a side note, it is actually quite difficult (imo) to get good composition on seascapes, to link the image together is crucial, having thre separate elements often works, but getting key elements in an image linked togerther like you have in teh first is very tidy.
I am not sure abotu teh overly cool tones, however given there was not much sun this is problably quite representative of the scene! I do see some nice moss/weed in there too with would be great to bring out.
#2 is nice also, dark, but nice, have you thought about a BW conversion, I reckon this one is a good candidate, make sure its nice and contrasty and I reckon ya can't go wrong.
If you heading up Sydney way sometime don't hesitate to drop a line - I will keep this locale in mind when I head down that way next!

Also, last one, horizon is almost as crooked as Abbott...

Certainly worth revisiting especially spot # 1 The colours in those rocks would really look good with a right kind of light. That's the problem with sunrises... they are a light lottery and you cant always get what you want. At least you now know where the good spots are!

#1 is a great composition. I like the muted colors but this may be a candidate for a BW conversion as well.

Thanks everyone for your feedback Hope you had heaps of fun, and I am looking forward to seeing these with the sun...so get back out there!
Yeah I want to and have many other ones around Kiama but waiting to get my ND grad from Lee. Is this looking towards bombo toothbrush/headland?
No but it does look like it haha. Although that would also be a great place to take a pic as you could have the rocks in the foreground and then toothbrush in the background and then sun rises like right next to it. It was taken near the point the Minimurra river joins the ocean, around those rocks and that is Minimurra Island. #2 is nice also, dark, but nice, have you thought about a BW conversion, I reckon this one is a good candidate, make sure its nice and contrasty and I reckon ya can't go wrong.
Nah I haven't thought about making a BW image. Don't do BW images too often but your right this one might work well as there isn't heaps of colour interest and it has a high contrast. If you heading up Sydney way sometime don't hesitate to drop a line - I will keep this locale in mind when I head down that way next!
Yeah definitely will. Haven't taken many photos in Sydney yet. Haha yeah I know all the secret photography spots around Kiama haha. So lucky to live in such a beautiful area. Also, last one, horizon is almost as crooked as Abbott...
I straightened them all on CS5 although the last one doesn't look straight at all

Not sure how a grad will work in this instance. Especially if you want to hide it's presence. The toothbrush hill will become quite dark if you use a grad.

This is the second time I've been back to look at these images and #1 continues to take my breath away. You've achived an evenly lit image in a way that is slightly surreal without being unnatural. You've nailed the composition as well to make an all round perfect image from my perspective. Don't get me wrong though #3 isn't too shabby either - it pushes the surreal I mention to make this look like it's been shot on the surface of some other planet. Brilliant work.

Maybe a HDR then, as for a sunrise it will retain the foreground detail and not make it a silhouette. I sorta did use a grad but not a glass one haha just a black piece of cardboard and moved it so it would have a soft edge haha.
