NX2 putting barcodes in my pictures

Postby biggerry on Sat Jul 24, 2010 6:37 pm

Well kinda, has anyone else had this occur? this is the first time I have ever seen this happen, basically I was adjusting teh contrast/brightness and this crazy pattern appeared, not quite repeatable, but I have had it happen twice in one day on two different images. Not really a significant issue since one can revert the .nef back to teh 'original'.

Have you tried a different image processor? Did you have some sort of filter on the lens?

Could be a camera problem, I was thinking.

Weird...cant offer any explanation why that should appear, although I would not think it was the software causing the problem. Nice pic BTW :D

Is it there before sharpening? The amount of halation on the headland and foreground rocks suggests excessive sharpening. . .

I have not tried another program, it has occured during one of the edit steps in Capture NX2, this particular one was after about the third step, from memory. The banding was not there in at the start, it appeared after an edit step. I am fairly sure its not a camera problem, but a NX2 issue.

yes, lee filter (GND) on teh front.

sirhc55 wrote:Is it there before sharpening?.

yes, it is not in the original untouched .nef file. it occurs after a few eedit steps.

sirhc55 wrote:The amount of halation on the headland and foreground rocks suggests excessive sharpening. . .

the only sharpening applied is during teh web resize, which is a 2 step progressive sharpen to get to 800px.

Interesting how the "barcodes" are darker at the top, and get lighter as they go down the image, isn't it?

Because the filter is graduated from dark to light, top to bottom - seems like a coincidence.

I'm still interested to see if this effect can be duplicated using different software - it just doesn't look like a software artifact to me!

Would you like to send me (or link) the nef?

Cheers

but, and its a big but (like the song) the original .nef does not have the banding in there!

.nef linked here DSC_6725-orig.nef

go your hardest, I have tried to replicate it but with not luck, however the day I as editing this series of shots it occured twice on two different images.

Oh! you mean the COMPUTER'S memory :P

Gerry. I have tried this on my system (NX2 Ver 2.2.4) I cannot get your pattern, but there does seem to be a series of dark bands down the left side that may get picked up with just the right sequence of manipulations. These bands seem to be part of the scene rather than any type of artifact. e.g. there is one just at the base of the lowest prominent cloud, and another near its top.

The nef does not have to have the bars as this could be a problem with manipulation. And, further to my original posting, I still maintain that there is halation suggesting excessive sharpening.

Please do not say that the nef contains the original information (aka, the negative). As soon as you start manipulation you are either adding to the original or subtracting from same.

Probably both.

At the same time.

Gerry,

At what point did these bars appear in the images?

Could you perhaps repeat your post on the images, noting every step and outcome, and then trying to identify at what point they initially appeared? Is it possible that they actually appeared at an earlier stage of your post, but not in quite the same form? And they they only came into prominence as you undertook further post?

yeah, i figured that much. as previously mentioned, it occured after about 3 edit steps, it was definitely not present before the contrast/brightness adjustment.

gstark wrote:Is it possible that they actually appeared at an earlier stage of your post, but not in quite the same form? And they they only came into prominence as you undertook further post?

I don't think so, when you compare teh edited version and teh original NEF, it would be pretty easy to pick that up.

sirhc55 wrote:And, further to my original posting, I still maintain that there is halation suggesting excessive sharpening.

if you can link the halation to the issue at hand, i will be impressed  In regards to sharpening, this NEF is out of camera with the picture control applied, nothing else, how can it have excessive sharpening?

sirhc55 wrote:Please do not say that the nef contains the original information (aka, the negative). As soon as you start manipulation you are either adding to the original or subtracting from same.

I do not understand this. for example if I have a nef file, I edit it, say 5 steps, then go nah I want the original back, I can select the 'Original' in the version drop down menu and its back to waht it looked like out of teh camera. Are you referring specifically to the nef in this thread or nefs in general? :?

If I could repeat this issue it would be a piece of cake I could submit a bug report, however I can't reproduce it, yet.

I think what Chris is saying is that as you do some editing, and commit that edit as a jpg, then you have a permant, altered version of the image.

But, at some point, something must be happening.

So, you start from your NEF, do something, what you see on the screen is clean, you do something, image is still clean ... repeat for a few more times, and then finally save as a jpg. That's perhaps your basic workflow?

And maybe it's only when the jpg version is created that this has appeared?

So, let's try to alter the workflow a little.

If you go back and open the NEF, is there still a history of the changes for this image?

Why not go back to the original NEF, and retrace that history path, and between every step ... closely examine the image, and then save it as a jpg, and then examine those results?

And just for shits and giggles, grab another image: a different one, but one taken under similar conditions, but one that you've not yet performed post on. Using a copy of the original NEF, run it through the same steps as the original image we're discussing, but, as per my suggestion above, perform the intermediate jpg saves after each step, and again, examine everything closely.

no, it was there in CNX2 when editing the raw file - I saved as jpeg for proof.

done, but not applicable since I know it was there on teh screen during the editing of teh raw file - as mentioned I am yet to reproduce the same effect, otherwise I would happily supply a ream of screenshots.

I had a play in NX2 with your image and could not replicate your barcode. I played with global levels, contrast, shadow and highlight protection, put in three control points for brightness and saturation, and leveled the horizon. Here is what it came out like.

 BTW, it's a nice image :)

NX2 also plays havoc with my images sometimes, putting large circles around the centre of the image. I just convert them all to Adobe DNG files and the problems go away. :)

2.2.4

I'm afraid saying "NX2" is quite vague, and not that helpful.

These issues can be impossible for others to try and replicate, if all the facts are not known.

to be honest I am not looking for people to replicate it, rather I am trying to 'sound' out' whether any one else has seen this or a similiar issue.

12-bit, 14-bit?

I wish my camera did 14-bit, but I am fairly sure its a lowly 12-bit :D

(ie; run at reduced RAM, but remove one stick at a time.)

thats a good point, however RAM gets regularly checked every 6 months or so using memtest, no issues there.

Sorry, I can't be of more help, but your NEF appears to be fine.

No, thankyou! for taking the time to have a go!
