 LOL@warranty comment.

Hope you enjoy your new system Andy. It does seem like it's very well specced for the price. Although it falls short of your initial criterion of ultra-portability (at close to 3kg), but 60Gb, 512Mb, R9700 should do you well into the foreseeable future.

HP/ Compaq make good stuff for Aussie, perhaps not in Canada!
Toshiba used to be a top seller but not anymore, people go for non brand name as Ausus, Gigabyte other, cheap, heap of extra features and do the job well.

I don't think HP / Compaq make good computers for any place in the world.

Fair enough, just so long as you're aware that most corporate consumers are technological idiots. :)

keep an eye on http://www.graysonline.com.au. often vendors like HP, Dell, Sony and Toshiba auction off laptops... ex demo, ex govt, ex display etc at pretty reasonable prices (depends on who bids) also Harris technology and other distributors...

check out the online auctions side of it. - then click view catalog at the bottom of that particular page...

Ive only ever bought an internal zip drive off them, arrived promptly. My only warning is make sure you add on the buyers premium (percentage of winning bid amount) as well as shipping to your bidding price.

Never deal with them same as never recommend to anyone!
If you buy a used notebook online, you're taking the risk, not seeing them working or not, that what I do not like. I rather save up and buy new online instead of buy used online.
And normally no warranty comes with the used stuff online.

I've been wanting to try a tablet PC for ages but my concern is the mouse would be a pain in the arse for gaming.

Another vote here for an Apple PowerBook.

They are powerful machines, and for someone like me who's not a computer geek, extremely easy to setup and use, virus and spyware free, and command a high resale value.

I'm on my second PowerBook now. After I bought my new Powerbook last year, I sold my three and a half year old Titanium G4 to a friend for $1,200: and it's still going strong today.
