d3100 or d7000hi
i need a writeoff camera when i travel to dangerous places im thinking of a d3100 which is half the price of the d7000 using it for general reportage is the iso performance and technology on the d3100 on par with the d3000?\ be using either camera with the NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Wendell Levi Teodoro

Re: d3100 or d7000wendell, the d3100 smokes the d3000. they are chalk and cheese. much better iso, much better controls, much better CMOS sensor....video of course ! some are also reporting that the d3100 AF is also much better despite the fact that the AF module is the same as the d3000. i can only think that perhaps the new CMOS sensors sensitivity to light is aquiring focus more quickly and reliabley than the older CCD sensor. its a pretty big step up for that camera.
if its a "trash it" camera you would need to balance the breakability vs cost of the d3100 against the d7000 which will be better built and harder to break but also cost a bomb....especially now. that lens will look/feel pretty big on a d3100 and you're only getting 42mm on the wide end btw. those would be my only concerns with that setup. Re: d3100 or d7000i thought so i think the d3100 is better its not a trash camera as in the sense ill be relying on its breakability
im going to use it in africa on a reportage project and its most likely ill get mugged so even if it has a couple of weeks usage and then i loose it then its no big deal from experience insurance in these situations don't really work unless you have a police report which is ulikely in the middle of nowhere so i really need a good disposable camera system better to buy 2 d3100's than a d7000 i think and no use bringing my d3 and affiliated lenses ill surely get robbed i guess i should get this dx 18-200 instead thanks man Wendell Levi Teodoro

Re: d3100 or d7000The 28-300 is an FX lens so yes, you would be better with the 18-200 which is the equivalent lens designed for DX. The 50mm f1.8 would also be good to have and it is cheap as.
What parts of Africa are you planning to go and get mugged in? I have a good contact in Cape Town if you need one. cheers, André Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution. Ansel Adams

Sounds like André is recommending a mugger.

Re: d3100 or d7000D3100 will be a smaller outlay and they are becoming a bit more available (although currently out of stock in Sydney City area it appears) whereas the D7000 is still unobtanium atm

Re: d3100 or d7000i would vote for D3100 without any consideration.. i m just too surprised by the latest technology of the video recording. Nikon has switched from a CCD to a CMOS image sensor. Combined with the new EXPEED 2 processor to maximize the results of the CMOS sensor. Lively colors, a better signal/noise ratio and powerful image processing to keep up the speed of the high resolution images and Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) video clips. and it's even the lightest DSLR in the Nikon history!
