Canon PowerShot SX1

Postby barry on Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:50 pm

A friend of mine is looking at buying this camera for her daugther to travel OS (Canada) early in the new year.

Not knowing much about this type of camera, does anyone have any comments to make about its usefulness as a still still camera and as a video camera for a novice operator.

Are there other similar cameras that she maybe should be looking at.

Is it a good value for money unit. Price is around $760-780.

Also what size card should she be considering ie are the videos memory hungry.

I suggested maybe 2 off 8GB cards and a card reader that could be used to download to a USB stick at internet cafes along the way.

What do everyone think?

That is too expensive for a superseded model camera.....have a look at the Canon SX30IS that is the successor and is cheaper.

As much as I love canon, there's definately something fishy with this camera.

Check out Fuji HS10 as well if they are after a superzoom DSLR feel but compacted. Also check out the SX 130 IS, which I know is even more compacted, it is a great quality camera at a great price.

Other compacts to keep in mind :

Sony HX5V ( yes.. i just did reccomend a Sony.. EXMOR R Sensor produces great "auto" snapshots)
Nikon P100
Lumix Fz100

Personal reccomendation lies on the HS10 or P100, for compacts HX5 or SX 130 IS. I know this is off topic.. but it may still be of use. :)

Don't be so negative!

HS10, FZ100, P100 all get my tick of approval!
