Women needed!

As a new user of this site, I have found there is a serious lack of female input (& members).

Now depending on how everyone else feels, I'm going out on a limb (and mind you it's obviously a big fat serious limb) to ask "whats the story"?

Are there no female photographers out there?

If there are, surely some must have D70's. If not why? If they do why don't they speak up on this site?

C'mon girls lets here from you!

Guys, I'm only trying to make it better for all of us. Imagine if there were more girls on the site! Hmmm. IMAGINE!

I won't go any further but there is a lack of female input and creatively I know they can have a great insight. (Don't get me wrong I only said creatively)

So as Leighton would say "C'mon" girls and get into it!

First of alll... wrong section.

Second of all... I'd imagine it has more to do with the issue of that there has always been more males visiting and joining forums then there has females. We don't actually have many female members, but we do have some, which is better than some of the forums I'm a member of and have been an admin of.
I'm not exactly sure why it's an issue, mind you, as everyone has a unique voice when it comes to speaking on a forum so what does gender, on an online forum, matter?

Yours is a timely post with yesterday being International Womens' Day

I asked a similar question last year when our numbers were much smaller, and it transpired that a few of our members were female, although were perhaps slightly cautious until they had a chance to determine that this forum was friendly and respected all participants regardless of gender or ethnicity or anything else (credit to Gary and Leigh).

As Birdy says, we have several active female members doing excellent work. Nicole in Melbourne is an outstanding talent, we also have marvin, HappyFotographer, Kristine, stormygirl, leigh999 and a number more.

Photography is gender neutral when it comes to process, which makes it an interesting form. I agree that males are more likely (on average) to enjoy the equipment side of the hobby, although several female members have disclosed a healthy lens lust. (I once spoke lovingly of our gadgets and copped a serve from Onyx, they are not gadgets, they are equipment)

There have been some great female photographers over the years too. I have always loved Annie Liebovitz's work, particularly in Rolling Stone, and the edgy and ultimately tragic Diane Arbus was an inspiration.

I hope that we continue to increase our female membership and contribution levels too, because I believe that women can see things differently to men, and that can enhance the enjoyment of photography for all of us, regardless of gender.

Such a cop out. Maybe you should go down to the most expensive and busiest restauarnt and watch a master chef, or top quality bar tender do his work. Then tell me that men can't multi task

...and they are just two exaples off the top of my head.

I am very respectful of women, and never give two thoughts to the idea that either species is dominant over the other. We each have qualities and strengths that are stronger than the other. Of coarse we are different types of people, other wise there would only be one sex in this world (that would really suck!).

I'm all for debates and opinions, but seriously, women need to get a new slogan. "men can't multi-task" is so old hat, and totally flase.

Greg B, very well put. I must say one of my favs is Diane Arbus. Interesting her talent was suppressed by her domineering husband in their fashion photog business, though much of the credit went to her, the stylist. Then she went on her own to do art photography and her pics are absolutely perfect. She even set the standard for some aspects of photojournalism (daylight flash to separate subject from background etc). I am currently planning a project in Squamish inspired by her work.

I heard that they may make a movie about her life soon and Nicole Kidman was going to play Diane. I can't wait, she's one of my favs (Diane).

One other point Marcus is that many women on boards use gender neutral handles so as not to attract unwanted attention. You may have read posts here by a woman who didn't feel the need to be identified by their gender, so didn't realise it was a woman. I believe photography is gender neutral (unless you are carrying a 600 F4 ), and if you notice most posters don't feel the need to identify their gender. I certainly don't, so wouldn't expect someone else to.

Hi Marcus,

I read the forum daily (and look at the pics!) but as I have 2 young children I find it very difficult to get out of the house and go where I want, when I want, to take photos. If I could, I would! I have also had the dreaded lurgy and the last thing I want to do is look through a view finder with a splitting headache!!! I've only had the D70 about a month, so really don't know all the ins and outs of it, and I would love some more time to play!

There are women here (thanks for the mention Greg B! Kinda makes me feel important! ), but some of us don't really get much time to pursue our hobbies!

Nothing at all. It means in my case that I can have a camera bag collection which rivals my wife's shoe collection and I get no grief (well actually I get quite a bit of ribbing for my handbag collection but I give as good as I get).
