Christening the new D7000 - Night Images in Olympic Park...

Postby Remorhaz on Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:01 pm

A friend invited me to take some sunset, twilight and night shots in Olympic Park at Homebush here in Sydney on the weekend and as I'd just bought my new Nikon D7000 it was as they say fortuitous timing. The area is filled with all manner of interesting architectural and other items to photograph and well worth the trip.

I took my eldest daughter with me to the evenings shoot and we met along the main Olympic Boulevard in the centre of the park.

Any constructive feedback, criticism or critique is welcomed.

This first was taken just on sunset at 7:20PM looking down the boulevard.

Working our way down the boulevard past the stadium and arena towards the fountains and earth pyramid at the end - 7:40PM

The Avenue

NIKON D7000 + 8.0-16.0 mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 16 mm, 3 sec at f / 11, ISO 100

We moved across the road at the bottom and climbed the earth pyramid. A silhouette of what looks like my daughter walking up the hill with the remnants of sunset/twilight behind (she actually had to stand still for the long exposure :)). You can see here she's sporting my trusty D90 which she has appeared to have claimed for herself now - 7:50PM

Image
NIKON D7000 + 17.0-50.0 mm f/2.8 @ 34 mm, 4 sec at f / 9.0, ISO 100

Finally after having been eaten to death by the plague of mosquitos we worked our way back to the water fountains - 8:10PM. It was interesting how much twilight colour we could still get in the sky with a long exposure.

Finally on our way back up the boulevard my daughter wanted this picture looking up the tunnel of trees - thats her trying to sit very still up there on the left :)

nice idea, its a great place with plenty of open spaces and as you mentioned, lots of interestign subjects.

too many pictures to critique, however the one that stands out for me is the 'Arc', great use of patterns and curves here - it is only let down by the 'chopping off' of various bits like the water arc an dthe lack of space around the subject. All this could have been solved by taking two steps back  I know those water features and there is a walk way just off to the right however you could get back a bit and get the next row of water spouts in completeing the scene.

on a side note, have you tried the in camera 'miniaturisation' feature in D7000? I have to say its a nice gimmick...

hope your enjoying your new toy, seems like you've lost your d90 to your daughter! She's a lucky girl for sure! #5 is my favorite shot! Love the colors, and the water looks amazing! the lighting just looks superb in this one, well to my tastes anyways. Glad to see you out and about and taking your daughter with you!! keep it up, she'll no doubt learn quickly too!!

Does this mean that you will be extra careful during the seascape escapades? I guess the plastic bag will come out??

I knew I'd get pinged for that :)

I did notice when I took the shot and moved back for another shot so I could get all the water at the top but I preferred the angle and colour of the sky in the first :(

#2 fountains are much improved in my mind. I couldn't quite figure out why I wasn't too keen on the 1st one!
