Thin Circular Polariser 77mm with front thread

Postby surenj on Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:27 pm

I need one with a front thread for use with my 77mm front element ultrawide lens(10mm crop). I may stack with one cokin P filter on a wideangle holder. I am happy to zoom out to 13mm or so to avoid vignette which may be unavoidable.

What brand of filters has a thin polariser with a front thread? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hoya HD perhaps (I have a 72mm one which I can check if it has a front thread) or one of the B&W ones (although I think many of their thin ones have no front thread).

Thankx Gerry, Will have a peek when we next catch up. I might test it with the cokin size filters to see whether I can get away with 13mm or so...

I have a 77mm Hoya HD Circ Pol filter and I screw it into a std UV filter. I find it easier to use if the the Circ Pol filter is on the front.

Things to watch though are:

Dont screw into lens too tight. Because the filter frame is so thin it can be a bugger to unscrew. I ended up buying one of those super grip pads you use to get lids off kitchen jars to help undo the filter.

Stacking two screw-in filters together may give you vignetting.

As for putting a Cokin in front, won't that make it harder to turn the Circ Pol filter?

Hope this helps.

Barry that's a good point about turning.

The only option is to get Lee filters and holders with a Lee/Singhray (cirpolariser) [shudders at cost]. As it's something I have lived without a problem, I feel it should be ok. Gerry uses a similar system where he screws the lee onto his circ polariser.

Why don't you just get a cokin p-series Circ Polariser? http://www.cokin.fr/filtres3.html I have one. It goes in the slot right next to the lense (on the holder) and can be turned without turning the whole holder?

Yeah you have to be carefully not to screw them on too tight, I have never had problems gettign mine off, sometimes you have to grip it in the right radial position since I suspect mine/others are not perfectly round and it binds in the threads at one point

Stacking more than one screw filter and combining that with a square holder will almost always give you vignetting on the wide end of the range. For me with the 11-16mm with two screw filters stacked and the lee holder means I have to get to 13-14mm to remove all the vignetting.

With regard to the cir pol and turning it, I find its easy enough to just rotate the whole lee holder in the clockwise direction then reposition the lee holder when its at the right position. Provided the ring is not too tight to swivel it will not jam the screw filter onto the lens, usually with mine I can turn it around all day then turn it anticlockwise and it screws the lee holder ring off.

I reckon you will be all good at around the 13mm mark, I will interested to see how it goes with the cokin filter system.

Hoya Pro1D are thin....as are the Marumi DHG series (that is what I use). I am pretty sure there is a B+W variant that works as well.......
