EOI Autumn colour up the mountains

Postby colin_12 on Sun Apr 10, 2011 2:32 pm

Some time ago Gerry and others intimated that they would like some info on when we would get good Autumnal colour up the mountains.
Well we are probably just about there. Any time from now onwards should give us something to see and capture.
Mount Wilson is the obvious venue for something like this and I will be in that area next weekend as we have a stall at the rare plant fair at Bilpin. So I can give a very accurate opinion of the colour there then.

If worse comes to worse then we can always revert to macro work or fungi experience instead.

Image

So let us know if you are interested in a group activity or not. Either way the time is about right if you want some colour up this way.

I'm pretty busy between now and the end of the month, but keep me in the loop. I really want to get some more camera time!

I'm keen - I'm away the Easter week but would definitely be keen otherwise if I can make it.

I'm also still keen on a macro fungi or otherwise shoot here in Lane Cove if you are sometime as well...

Be nice to see you again Stubbsy. Work can be a bummer sometimes.

Yeah that is sky.

So I guess we need to nail down a good time for all.
At the mo I think Easter weekend is OK for me, a maybe for Gerry, but leaves Rodney out in the cold?
Maybe the week after Easter?
I will be able to make a call on if that may be to late next weekend :cough:

What am I saying, it is never the wrong time to be up in this neck of the woods

I am quite keen.

Waiting for my macro tubes to arrive. I don't have a macro lens.

Easter is out for me. Maybe weekend after? How about first week of May?

The tubes are a good way to go Suren. I used a set to great effect for years. It was only when I purchased my first dslr that I finally went for a dedicated macro lens. I have since bought a set of tubes to use with the macro as well. Most people tend to swing a 50mm off the end of the tubes. I think with your strobist side you will enjoy some macro play.

I am good for the first weekend in May as far as I know at present. We may have lost a lot of the leaves by then though.
We'll see I guess.

Thanks for the tip re 50mm Colin. That way my 50 will see some use. I don't use it as much now that I have the 17-50 2.8.

Please don't delay things because of me as I am not certain about any dates in the next few weeks. Been away from home for too many weekends. :surrender:

Probably - I'm not yet sure if we're coming back on Mon or Tues.

NB: Theres another similar thread going on WP (autumn colours) and some of the comments re Mt Wilson/Mt Tomah are that it's not ready yet (still green)?

Interesting, we were in Lithgow on Sunday and there were a lot of nice colours around. I would have thought Mounts Wilson and Tomah would be in the same sequence if not earlier.

I will swing by Mnt Wilson tomorrow if I can to make sure.
It is interesting that the Japanese maples at Berambing have not really coloured up yet though.

OK finally stoped in at Mnt Wilson to check the colour on the way to Bilpin.
It looks at least a couple of weeks off for most of the vibrant colour in the maples etc.
There is a bit of early colour but probably needs at least a couple of weeks before it is really good. Especially if the weather is as mild as predicted last night.
So there is our preverbial spanner.
How are people stiuated for two - three weeks time?

OK then lets organise for the weekend of the 30th April/ 1st May.That should give us some good colour with the way the weather is going this week. If I get the chance beforehand I will check the colour for you all.
Andrew I can understand the obsession, eventhough it would be good to have you out with us.
I will probably be out for the following weekend as I have an assignment due on the Monday. Gotta love uni.
Time to select the day that suits most of you on this weekend people.

Saturday 30th will be out for me. The dive is at Oak Park, the same site where I saw the pygmy pipehorse. I should be able to make the 1st. Of course, the traffic coming down the mountains on a Sunday afternoon won't be great especially with all the road work.

I had figured that but you will be under house arrest for a while won't you?

The colour is all over the shop at present, lower to mid mountains is looking good but higher up only has certain trees or the odd patch of good colour here and there. A truely odd Autumn.

It looks like Sunday the 1st has most takers. (apart form Greg, but we will be thinking of him)

I'm in.....I guess the meeting place/point would depend on who is going and how they are planning to get there.

EDIT: Actually I just realised why I cant make it that weekend....Im shooting a wedding the night before and will probably be in no shape to attend a meet

doh, scratch me from this session - I am doing battle with a 13yro at camp that weekend sorry guys, I hope it is a good one for yas.

as for traffic, I would even consider leaving the car at glenbrook or something to avoid that traffic, with that 8km of roadworks it is very nasty.

That wouldn't work very well if we're going to Mount Tomah or Mount Wilson. Bells Line of Road is the most sensible route (at least for those that don't live in the Mountains). I'm still considering going via Richmond even though it is further.

Bells Line of Road is much more sensible that GReat Western. Even if you are aiming for Mt Vic.

It still clogs up though as more and more people discover it.

One option to avoid that time (and it is based on the traffic outside my place) would be to have dinner up here and head back late. Not sure what options are available on that side though.

For some... yes. Would you go to Mount Victoria via Bells Line of Road (from home)?

Sunday still looks to be our best bet.

Only if you are prepared to model it for us.

OK so we have:
Stubbsy,
Matt plus the Boss I presume,
and me,
maybe :
Rodney,
Suren,
and Andrew

Any other takers?

The colour here in the mid mountains is going well at present so Gerry's call for good colour up at Mnt wilson and Tomah looks to be good. (there is apparently free entry into Mnt Tomah Botanic Gardens at present)
It would be great if we could start a little early as we would be able to get more garden/plant shots sans tourists.
The traffic would also be much more manageable. It would probably serve us well to meet in front of the old cafe at Mnt Wilson.
Anyone like to suggest a time? I was thinking 9ish.
