Ring Flash

Postby Jeff on Thu May 26, 2011 8:54 am

Hi
Just wondering if any of you guys have had any experience with a ring flash. If so is the Orbis the one .
I have seen the Utube videos on this model and it looks like it works OK.
Your thoughts please.

Jeff,
I use the Canon ring flash with their 100m macro lense for both macro and poitraits and am more than happy with it. Because it is ETTL I can also use it to trigger other flashes if required. It has the ability to change the amount of light on either side so you can get it tuned so it's not a flat flash. While it is a bit cumbersome it certainly does a great job and as a bonus provided donuts in subjects eyes if your into that .
Sorry no experience with the Orbis.

Jeff, unless it's for professional use, also check out the Ikea Ring Flash

Or you could opt for a cheaper try out option like

These are available through Phottix as well.

Hey Jeff,
I've nothing against the O-flash but they eat up to 6 stops of light and not really acceptable I reckon. YMMV.

I suppose we should ask what you are likely to be using the flash for Jeff?

Colin
I guess mainly for portraits ie mainly for grandkids. I don't want to set up a studio or anything like that. I was just surfing the net and came accross the ring flash and thought it might be a good thing.

I guess that is why they are so cheap......

I have used the orbis ring flash before, it seems similiar to the O-flash thing, if your only after something as a weekend warrior then I would not go and buy some dedicated ring flash but rather one of the 200 buck adapter thingys like teh orbis (whether they are good value or not is yet to be decided imo)

however you can get half decent results, heres two from yonks ago with the sb600 and ring flash adapter.

I've never heard of anyone using a ring to shoot children, but each to their own.
