SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...I entered the Sydney Morning Herald 1440 Photo Challenge which was held on Saturday. This is the first year that the challenge has been held for the public to enter.
The basic premise is that you're a photojournalist for the day and are given three briefs to photograph in the Sydney CBD on that day (1440 minutes in a day). The three Briefs for this year were: - Public Transport - Red - City Living I joined Craig (Alpha_7) for the day and we wandered the streets looking for images which fit the bill... So I was hoping some members here could assist me in choosing which one image in each of the three briefs (i.e. you get to submit one image for each of the three briefs - so three in total) from my shortlist to submit Sorry mods in advance for the number of images - if you'll indulge me I'll remove the ones not selected afterwards? Public Transport (in theory could be Red as well) Red (again in theory could be Red or Public Transport) City Living Last edited by Remorhaz on Tue Jul 19, 2011 8:35 am, edited 1 time in total.

Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...Well first of all, well done mate, some great captures here.
For me, to fit the criteria I'm going for #5 cheers. Nikons.
Nikkor's.
Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...For me, photojournalism tells a story. So based on that premise, and the themes:
#1 In. Tells a story, and fits all three themes #2 Great photo, and fits one theme, but I don't see a story. Out #3 Potential story here and one theme, possibly two met. In, but not as strong as #1 #4 Fits all three themes, but I don't see the story #5 Interesting photo and two themes, but a story? #6 There is a story here, but red is marginal. City living is OK #7 City living. Could match in with the current story on leasing scams. #8 Pretty photo, but no story here and I can't see the link to any of the themes So all in all, I would go with #1, #3, #7 in that order Greg

Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...- Public Transport
#1 - Red #4 - City Living #8 gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.
Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...
Thanks Greg - note that the aim is to submit a different image for each theme - so three images in total - one for each brief
Thanks Gerry Looks like #1 was a hit for public transport (it's the one I wanted to submit). I was struggling with the third brief and didn't think I had anything strong which met it (and was planning to go with the last image which I thought looked nice and might be twisted to meet the brief by creative naming of the image file (e.g. "sparkling_city_nightlife" or something?) Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...I think #1 for public transport, an unusual perspective. #3's not bad but less imaginative.
I think #5 for red, again a bit out of the ordinary. #4's not bad but more static. I don't think you've nailed it for city living. Lots of city, not so much living.
Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...Number five for me, and probably under the category of "red".
It's clearly not relevant to any form of public (or any other) transport in Sydney, as it appears to be moving. I agree with Murray in that I don't think you're showing anything of merit in terms of city living. g.

Not anything great but... NB: The brief asked us not to include photos of people which were identifiable. D600, D7000, Nikon/Sigma/Tamron Lenses, Nikon Flashes, Sirui/Manfrotto/Benro Sticks

Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...Hey Rodney - great set of images.
For me out of the ones you have offered. #3 Taxi Line Up - Public Transport #5 and #4 in close second for Red - how did the Westpac sign / post box go ?? # 7 for City Living I like the UWA showing how ontop of each other everyone is. BTW - I've been looking in the galleries of the submissions and not everyone follow the suggestion of not excluding recognisable people.

Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...
Damn. That would make it hard. But you could argue the fact that he is turned away makes him anonymous. Most of the TV News shows people clear when they turnaway & only fuzz them when they are facing the camera. So I would go with #1 - Public transport (or Red in which case, #3 for PT) #4 Red or #5, but I prefer 4 Your street person for City Living, but failing that, #7 but it is much weaker. Greg

Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...So Rodney - which photos did you end up entering ?
Re: SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help me choose...I went with my initial gut feel for the first two and used 1 and 4 but ended up using 7 instead of 8 (I personally liked #8 except I didn't really think it fitted the brief ).
