SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

SMH 1440 Photo Challenge - Please help

So as Rodney said in his post, we both went out for the Sydney Morning Herald / Foto Riesel challenge.

I wouldn't mind some unbiased feedback on my shortlist below.

Public Transport

Bus, Train, Ferry and Taxi (had a debate on if a Taxi was strictly public transport, but it's definitely transport used by the public).

RED - I found this one hard.

Please fire away - I feel I'm probably pushing the bounds of some of the themes.

If you use the first I think you might need to crop a little tighter (theres too much bright space at the top)

Of the two reds maybe the first - I had those two as well but neither really floated my boat

With the last perhaps it's an optical illusion but it looks like it spreads out but the sides seem to line up?

I understand what you are after better here than when I posted to Rodney.
(Numbering from the top, ignoring your categories)
Public Transport #3. Maybe #1 if you use Rodney's Crop.
Red #5
City Living. Nothing particularly strong, but perhaps #2 - there's a lot going on in that photo, but its a shame you cropped though the girl on the left. Or maybe, just maybe, #6 - The two figures give a sense of isolation in the concrete jungle

Thanks for the feedback Rod and Mr D - I appreciate you taking the time.

I've had a shot at cropping one of the public transport candiates (see below).

I found all my Red shots pretty uninspiring or too similar to already posted entries - so between a rock and a hard place. :)

Remorhaz wrote:With the last perhaps it's an optical illusion but it looks like it spreads out but the sides seem to line up?
Probably not an optical illusion, I did a little bit of perspective correction as from the shooting angle the top got skinner, so your eyes are probably expecting that, rather then it all lining up.

I'll have a look at the original when I get home, but I actually think I had more of the gift on the left, but straiting the shot so the platform was level pushed her a little out of frame I'll see if I can reclaim that :)

Thanks guys!

Oh and the re-crop - is this any better ?

Yes I think so, but how about a square crop? You'll probably lose your cyclist though.

Transport:

#1 cropped pano style - remove all teh stuff above the traffic lights - wh8ilst the ferry adds to the concept it is not a eye drawer imo.

Red:

#2 (in that series)

City Living:

#2 (in that series) convert to BW?

Thanks for the feedback all.

In the end I went for a squar crop of the first one, the kids playground and the colour version of the apartment block.

Voting is now open for the peoples vote via facebooks, so if anyone wants to send a vote my way I'd be appreciative.

Trouble is, you have to be a member of facebook to even see them, let alone vote.

I agree and I loath that they created it like this - but being a facebook peon it didn't cause me issues, but had I not been one - I wouldn't have entered the comp. Signing up to a social networking site to enter a newprint competition is..... silly.
