What would you buy?

Postby Geoff M on Sun Aug 14, 2011 6:20 pm

I know I have to make the decision myself, but thought I would throw the question out there anyway and see what words of wisdom you fellow forum members could provide.

I am looking for a back up body to my D90. I am unsure whether to go for a used low shutter count D90 or D300s or to go for a new D7000. The cheapest way is the D90 (maybe $600/700) and most expensive is the D7000 (around ($1300 + extra SD card(s)). What advantages are there to gain with either the D300s/D7000?

Geoff,

D7000.

It's easily the best of the cameras currently available, and it's also the one that's the most futureproof.

is the money a part of the equation?

if not then its a easy one - D7000 all the way home.

I am leaning toward the D7000, nearly bought one on my way home from the UK at Hong Kong airport, but would you believe it is actually cheaper to purchase grey here in Oz. Airport price was HKD12,500 = AUD1,550. Cameras Direct currently have it at $1,299, has any one seen it cheaper elsewhere? (Cameras Direct are local to me so no postage either).

Grey @ DD for 1275

I bought mine from ryda for 1280 and its aussie stock. Check the usual sites, staticice, shopbot etc and you might get close to that.

I will say this... I will not buy a camera without a flip screen again. So I wouldn't buy any of them.

While I can see the merits of a flip screen, I wouldn't be able to make good use of it due to my presbyopia (old fart's eyes). I can see perfectly well through the viewfinder without glasses but would need to use reading glasses to see the flip screen. With the reading glasses on my distance vision is useless.

After using a flip screen on the Samsung EX1 (Premium compact) I can see how useful they are...but Andrew does make a good point

I can relate to that! I have found in the past few months, I am continually removing my distance glasses to see the LCD display where as in the past I have been able to see near and far with the same script lenses.

In regards to a purchase, I am still undecided. May just wait a while and see if a D300s replacement materializes.

also, apparently D400 will have wireless HDMI and will come with a pair of glasses which can receive the picture....

Seriously, get the D7000 and make your D90 backup. The choice is easy and when you see the ISO 6400 from it, you will realise that you made the right choice.

I agree, the amount of times I have had my ass in the air and my face on the ground (don't quote me outta context ya dirty bast$#@) to look thru the viewerfinder is enough to justify and outweigh any negative effects of the flip screen.

This is precisely why I bought the optional view finder for my LX5. To use the standard live view screen, I had to put my glasses on.. Then I couldn't see the scene. The viewfinder is electronic & therefore "liveview", but at least it has a dioptre adjustment.

Thanks for the input and opinions, I have considered my options and have finally made a decision and decided on none of the afore mentioned bodies. I have however made a purchase and have gone with a Nikon R1C1 speedlight kit instead

A body upgrade will follow at a later date.
