Lucas shoots a christening

So i was at my nieces christening on saturday and lucas was hanging to take photos with me. lucas is 4yo. i didn't instruct him or talk to him about what to shoot at all, he just wandered around, (like he owned the joint), shooting whatever took his fancy.



here are 4 of the photos he took.

"why did you take this photo i asked ?" (thinking he took it of the windows)
"isnt it cool the way the window made his book all red ?"



fascinated by these stairs. they had no handrail so he wasnt allowed to go up. hence there was an obsession with guess what ? getting up there.



i know pretty good photographers that even at my age dont think of looking up.



i didnt take a photo of the baby's cute little shoes. luckily lucas did.



was a great day. seeing him busting with joy at nailing a shot still makes me smile.

Why, he's doing great as it is.
Assuming that these photos haven't been cropped, what amazes me is the sense of composition he has, none of those photos have the main subject smack in the middle which is what beginners usually do.

This is proof that you don't need a DSLR to take great photos It's not about the gear people.

Lucas is just as good infront of the camera as behind it! He's been such a great model for you now it's nice to see him sharing your passion for photography. The images are fantastic and I really hope he keeps at it, we may just have the next big photographer in our midst.

It may not be about the gear, but the little LX is going to limit the amount of creative freedom in terms of playing with DOF, and there is already a bit of noise seeping through in some of these images. A DSLR would help give that little bit more. PS my original comment was intended as a joke, but seems like I have to justify my comment to some here

Going deeper into the realms of Off-topicana, a DSLR is a relatively large and heavy beast for a 4 year old. I know that Alex manages the D200 with 85 with SB800, but for him to carry around even just a DSLR with, say 50, for an extended period is pushing the boundaries of his strength.

Lucas may well be different.

the shots are not cropped at all. they have a levels adjustment and some NR applied in NX2. i thought the lx3 handled the poor light really well though.

cam, lucas does shoot the d5100 alot, more than the lx3, but to patricks point, he's not strong enuf to wield it around his neck for a solid hour walking around. i think if he had used it he would have got tired in 15 minutes and stopped shooting.

ive thought about his compositions and i dont know if he's using the rule of thirds intentionally, if hes picked it up from seeing so many of my pics or if its just by accident. i dont want to mention it to him or question though cos i think at this age, he should just shoot. the less he thinks the better...which isnt real hard for a 4yo boy. lol

he also doesnt know how to zoom, i dont want him to use that yet. so effectively hes shooting a prime and "zooms" with his feet. well may you laugh, but i see him do it. walking closer and further away to frame it the way he wants it.

The fact that the images are not cropped at all compounds the fact that we have a very talented child in a midst. I am sure he will continue learn and grow with more camera time. It will be interesting to see how he progresses, please continue sharing Lucas's work.
