Dragonfly

I was out trying to get flight shots of pelicans when I noticed this dragonfly hovering around. The 80-400VR was a bit slow at times so this was the best I got. Almost got it but not quite as the head is a bit blurry.

Nicole....you've nailed it. Today I think you've seen my shot of the Cabbage White Butterfly. A few times I was trying to get it midflight. I found it very difficult. Perhaps the dragonfly have a flight that is more predictable, I'm not sure. The butterfly however was darting all over the place and I found it impossible to pan with.

WoW  Great shot Nicole, don't know how you caught this baby. They go at Warp Speed, well done.

Kipper, I can just imagine you darting all over the place with that big VR Club, wouldn't like to be standing next to you in action. :?

Hey Nicole,
This is a fine shot. I see no real focal distractions? The way the dragonfly has it's legs tucked up like so is most interesting and clear to see in your shot. I like the way you have it framed within the area and the background is a delight!

Thanks

Hi Nicole,

Nice shot there. Not easy to catch it in mid flight.

Manual focus may be easier.

Arthur

Outstanding shot Nicole. Reminds me of a scene from Apocalypse Now - "I love the smell of nectar in the morning...."

They're bloody hard to capture though I have found they'll often retrace their flight paths so sometimes you can be lucky. Not to say that this was a lucky shot!

I've got a couple of in-flight dragons but nothing of this quality. My favourite is one I shot sunbaking, here: http://manta.smugmug.com/photos/17054426-L.jpg- if anyone is interested.

Keep up the great work Nicole.

Nicole

Notwithstanding your comments about focus I'd have to say I'd be more than happy with this shot and I reckon you should be too.

Beautiful Nicole, well caught.

You've done well to catch that with the 80-400... Wouldn't notice the soft focus on the head if it wasn't mentioned, looks great to me...
