Thank you Cameron. Since the posting, I learned
through you and Google that "Kung Hei Fat Choy"
is the Cantonese equivalent.
I received an email from a friend with "Kong Xi Fa Chai"
and I thoght it was a spelling mistake of "Gong xi fa cai",
that is why I used it, perhaps unwisely.

As I said before I do not speak Mandarin, but I have seen all sorts of variations of what you posted being used, so you shouldnt have been too far off the mark if you were not correct with using the Mandarin greeting.
