Today the rain and bad weather finally broke in Victoria around mid-morning, so I decided to try my luck with some Motocross at the local track...

All good looking shots Adam - the last two look quite warm especially when compared to second.

Nailed the focus on all those and they look really nice and sharp.

Thanks Gerry. They were all shot on cloudy WB. I'd guess the second shot was taken when it was actually cloudy, whereas the others were taken when the sun was out.
I changed a few to daylight WB in post, but decided I liked the warmer look better on those few. I didn't look at all of them, so I'd say you're right. It does look a warmer on some of them compared to others. I probably should have looked through the whole set.

I'll change them and see what you think.

I think the warmer tones actually suit - mainly since mud looks tops when its brown and warm.

That second one is a cracker, I love the eye contact - thats a big compliement from me, i have zero interest in mud and bikes

I really love the second one of these although all of them are brilliant and sharp and makes me want to get on a bike pronto!

Motocross Madness

Postby Wink on Wed Mar 07, 2012 10:46 am

Thanks Mozzie.

I've had quite a few enquiries about selling these photos. I'm more than happy to do that, but I've got no idea on what to price them at as digital files (no prints).

Can anyone offer any advice regarding that?

i could give you a 20 minute speil but really what you probably want is a number...

imo. $50 per high res and you retain the copyright.

of course there are other factors that change this, ie who wants them? corp?, publisher? private end user?

Private user. Basically the people in the photos or the parents of the people in the photos would like them.

I guess I also need to assess what other people selling motocross photos charge. I did see other people there in as a money making adventure. I just went there as a chance to do something different. Sales is always a good thing though.

Make sure you sell rather quickly. People will lose interest otherwise. Nice captures!

Thanks guys.

I looked at the others in the same circle selling shots and the going rate seems to be around $15-$20.

I decided to go with $20 and include 2 versions of the file per photo purchase. High res and low res watermarked for internet usage.

Time will tell if that suits the market.

I saw one site that said "if you can afford to race you can afford a photo." That pretty much sums it up. It's an expensive sport so buying photos shouldn't be an issue.

First of all, it's only mostly true. Many people go racing on a shoestring ... because they love the sport. While they'd love to buy photos, tyres, fuel, the next engine rebuild, the next shoulder rebuild all come ahead of that.

And I think it's also being very disrespectful to your potential clients.

I didn't say I use that line. I wouldn't use that line. I didn't even go there with the intent to sell the shots. I do this for the enjoyment. Anything else is a bonus.

It was obvious the owner of the site I'm referring to is very concerned with the old right click - save image as problem. Huge watermarks right across the photos and a whole spiel about usage and if he catches someone with one of the shots the bill will be in the mail... Not really the image I'd want to portray personally.
