A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139not cheap, but the bees knees when it comes to the latest and greatest in chopper material.
I was hoping for a sunset session with this aircraft, however beers intervened and its was this or nothing. I do wish it was straight on the heli pad though. Critique more than welcome gerry's photography journey

A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139I've just had a vision of a bit of motion blur on the rotors. Make it happen Gerry!
Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139
lol, i am not sure i could get past the OHS department.. but how fing cool would that be..lightpaint the rootercraft as the blades are turning! you would get the distance marker discs from teh rotating blades.. gerry's photography journey

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139Looks like a chopper for a man with a limp wrist.
Now the Pave Hawk or the Little Bird or SuperCobra and not forgetting the Viper - those are real men’s choppers Chris

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139Lovely colours and very good pictures, but
something is missing. I'm not sure what, is it a person in or nearby the copter? A sign perhaps indicating the machine is in standby awaiting for an assignment?
Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139Great work...I also vote spinning blades!

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139
cheers Zafra, the second one speaks to me regarding this, its a view from behind at night overlooking the aerodrome, awaiting the call. Very rarely do you see expensive bits of machinery sitting out in teh elements unless they are needing to be ready to roll at a moments notice. One concept i did play with was having a crewie or pilot in teh frame, however given teh long exposures i did not really give it much furtehr consideration. Maybe next time.
so whatcha reckon of the picture?
i'll pass..thats definitely more than 5 minutes worth.. gerry's photography journey

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139Interesting shots Gerry. I think Zafra and yourself are on the right track about including a pilot etc like an environmental portrait to enhance these; Although I think the light is nice and even considering the huge structure. Spinning those rotors would be cool but I know how hard it is even on a toy helicopter.
Other suggestion is about the color scheme. I don't like those dirty oranges and would prefer cooler tones in the background. That winch looks out of place but I am a helicopter noob. When are we doing that heli shoot....
Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139It's a great chopper, great shots!
I've seen these choopers in action, too many times, watched them deliver doctors, take away casualties and save lives... it's a great sound to hear the blades cutting the air if your on the ground trying to keep someone alive.
I saw Supercobras, Pavehawks and Apaches flying about when I was in the US last year... I was like a kid in a candy store.... 2x D700, 2x D2h, lenses, speedlights, studio, pelican cases, tripods, monopods, patridges, pear trees etc etc

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139
in some ways I agree, however for me lookign at aircraft, sometimes just the aircraft without anyone else works for me. BG lighting is always a issue, i don't mind the warm tones of those lights but I have not really played with the much, cooler might well work better. FYI, the winch is typical for all rescue machines.. Heli-shoot, well ya will have be happy with a Albatross session atm.
yeah, these ones are a class unto themselves, teh huge cabin, the med outfit, the avionics suite, NVG capability etc.... once they sort teh tail rooter issues out they should be sweet. gerry's photography journey

You are a heliporn purist. I should have known.

Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139Well, Why don't I bring mine to a meet and you can fly it. Recently I crashed it from about 15 metres and it seemed to survive....
Gives me an idea for a heli flight shot with strobism....
Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139 BTW these are missing backlight which would make them look less flat and more 3D if that important to you.
I wonder whether they'd care if you fired up a smoke machine near those um....birds... I have an idea for a backlight....
Re: A real Man's Helicopter - Augusta/Westland AW139
bring that shit on - i'll have it wrapped around a powerline before you know it
yeah, you have given me ideas on the back lighting - however its not as easy as it seems, careful attention to camera position and shadows is key. Much like a hairlight on a model. lol smoke machine - i know what your thinking... gerry's photography journey
