Cropping opinions

Hi All

I took some shots of the MIL (turned 90, 4 months ago) & my two daughters on mothers day, I really like the one below but dont know how far to go with the crop,

Thoughts & comments would be appreciated,

first image for me, however start by straightening it then cropping.

there is little in the surrounds that appeals to me, hence the preference for a tight crop.

I'd ditto Gerry but add that maybe it might be worth making some adjustments to see if you can 'pop' the subjects out of their surroundings a little more.
As the surrounding is not of particular note the more you contrast the subject vs the background the better.

Had another hack at it, this time in Nik Siler Efects instead of Lightroom

I ended up going with a tighter crop.



Not sure why Lightroom deleted the other versions. Publish seems to synchronise as opposed to adding to.

A late thought, I would further crop the last
version into a square format leaving the half-table
out. You should end up getting a more interesting
image with a vertical line left to right of the
subjects size and age and it will keep the viewer's
eye on the subjects because you would have
remove unnecessary distractions. What it is
important here is the interaction between the
subjects and their closeness.

I assume it deleted the copy on the Web not the one on your computer.

If you edit the "original" LR assumes you want to republish the updated image. Depending on where it is going the hosting service may decide that it is a new photo and delete the old one, promptly breaking all the links. Flickr, especially the free version is very goo (BAD!!!) at this.

The way around it is to create a virtual copy of the image in LR then edit that copy. LR will treat it as a new image and publish (as opposed to republish) the new one, leaving the old one intact on the web.

If, like me, you forget to create the virtual copy, you can go back to the original, create the VC, then reinstate the edits. Nik may break this however as the edits are outside LR, so are not captured by history.
