My Lens Moves...

Postby marcus on Sun Mar 13, 2005 8:34 pm

My new AFS f2.8 70-200VR lens wobbles around a bit. Anyone else have this problem?

No, my 70-200VR is 19 months old and the rings are well solid.

No wobble on mine, and I have had it since late Nov. 2004.

On the bayonet fitting. I have a friend with a D70 and the same lens, he asked me if mine moved (because he had noticed his moving) and I said no.

The next day I fitted the lens to take some shots and having what he had said in mind immediately noticed the movement.

I'll elaborate my later (Boss calling....got to put kids to bed!).

My 18-70 kit lens wobbles quite badly at the filter end, but I've compared it with others' at the mini meet and they were the same...

Most lenses (cheap) will produced the same problem after few month in uses, but not on the brand new 70-200VR

All the Nikon 70-200VR are genuine product from Nikon. No aftermarket on this product.
Most of the Nikon 70-200VR shipped to our member in the last couple weeks are stock of Nikon USA, not with the standard Nikon gold box and with the Nikon USA sticker.

This is the quoted lens. I would agree with Jethro, about 2mm of movement.

Movement at the camera mount is common on any Nikon - it's a question that I've seen on many forums.
Some move more, some less, but it's the movement that stops lenses sticking in the mount.

With the mating of two metal surfaces there has to be a degree of movement. If two metal surfaces locking together are absolutely matched they would lock and be virtually impossible to unlock without a tremendous amount of force. With any lens you have to consider that you are dealing with a consumer product that is matching to another consumer product - the D70. This entails a degree of latitude as no camera and lens are produced together to give a perfect match

This is indeed true.

Certain lenses will move on certain bodies and others will not.

There is a rubber seal at the mating point, so, a little play is normal I guess.
