Rumour - D600 to be announced by Nikon in Dubai on Sep 13th

Postby Remorhaz on Wed Sep 05, 2012 10:47 am

Rumours are indicating the D600 (entry FX) will be announced by Nikon at an event in Dubai on Sep 13th

Apparent rumoured specs will be (for those noticing essentially a 24MP FX D7000 with some newer D4/D800 techno goodness):

Very small and lightweight body (similar size/weight to D7000)
16 bit image processing
Expeed 3 processor
Maximum video recording: 30 minutes
Built-in mic
19 scene modes
Magnesium alloy only on top and back only (like D7000)
Maximum shutter speed of 1/4000
Shutter life: 150,000 cycles (the D800 is rated for 200,000 cycles)

24.7MP full frame sensor
Weight: 760g (850g with battery and memory cards), the D800 weights 900g
3.2" LCD with 921K dot with ambient sensor control
HDMI output
Video compression: H264/MPEG-4
Full HD with 30p, 25p, 24p, HD with 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p
Viewfinder coverage: 100%
The Nikon D600 will have built-in AF motor
The body most probably will be weather sealed
The D600 will not have built-in GPS
ISO range: 100-6400 (with Lo-1 ISO 50 and Hi-2 ISO 25,600)
39 AF points (with an option of 11 AF points), 9 cross-type AF points
AF face detection
Exposure compensation: ±5 EV (same as the D800)
The D600 will probably use the EN-EL15 rechargeable Li-ion battery
5 fps (same as the D700, the D800 has 4fps)
2 SD card slots with Eye-fi support
Build-in retouching images functionality
Built-in flash with sync speed of 1/250s
Two user settings: U1 and U2
Fn button
Auto DX crop mode
In-camera RAW editor
Built in time-lapse functionality
Build-in HDR
New external battery grip
Internal AF motor
The price of the D600 is rumored to be very low - maybe as low as US$1500

At a quick glance that sounds exactly like a D7000, except for the sensor size.

EDIT There are few little differences, the D7000 has only a 3" screen but 6FPS.

Cheers

It doesn't say it takes pictures? On a more serious note, can it play BF3 at full resolution?

oh dear, it's going to be one day after the iphone5 and ipad7(inch) launch. Bad timing on Nikon's part as the limelight will be taken by igadgets.

I don't think Nikon will require any limelight for this. At these specs and price point the bloody thing will be even harder to come by than a D800E…

my d700 is limping to the line, i hope this one is good. the a stop loss of SS and the AF are the only key concerns for me.
the price looks outrageous. cant see that happening.

Yes the 1/4000 rather than 1/8000 seems surprising to me - like an on purpose knobling vs the D800/D4 (however the D7000 can do 1/8000)

If it did pan out roughly as expected and I did manage to get one I'd be looking for a UWA and midrange tele (I'm covered elsewhere) - like the 16-35/4 and 24-120/4 combo you have (or a 24-70/2.8). I'm comfortable with the idea of the 16-35 (vs the 17-35 which appears to only have f2.8 as it's only virtue over the 16-35 or the 14-24 which I wouldn't get) however I'd be interested in your thoughts on the 24-120/4 (vs say a 24-70/2.8) - obviously it's got a longer focal range (which I'd like since I already find my 17-50/2.8 (on crop) restrictive at the long end (75mm equiv)), VR (which I also like) and cheaper/smaller/lighter. Apparently the IQ is fairly similar between the two with the 24-120 having a bit more vignetting at the wide end. The 24-70 has 2.8, faster AF? and pro build in it's corner.

you summed it up pretty well. I ran them both together for a couple of weeks when i had the 24-70. The 24-70 is a better lens producing better iq, no question about it. Its also certainly faster in af. But IMO, the increase in iq isn't enuf to justify its shortcomings which is range, size, weight, no VR. Don't care about "pro build". I'm not a pro and don't abuse my gear. I still have an 18-55 which still works perfectly. The 2 biggest downsides of it IMO is the crap lens hood...worst I've ever seen, (16-35 is the same), and the distortion at 24mm is unacceptable for people shots or key image components unless they are dead centre and a few meters from you. A horizon can be straightened pretty quickly but try straightening an egg head...not so easy.

You can borrow mine and judge for yourself. I don't use it much tbh, I shoot with the 50/85 almost exclusively.

Yep - this was more about the potential announcement date - i.e. soon (and some updated specs)

Thanks for the very kind offer - I may just have to take you up on that one day... Will have to see if the D600 comes out first :)
