D600 first image

With everyone getting new bodies, I think that separate section for you to proudly display your first image from your new acquisition is in order.

This applies to brand new bodies, as well as bodies that are simply newly acquired by you.

D600 first image

Here is the first image out of my new D600. It works... rather nicely I think. A lot to get used to but the layout is very similar to my D7000 as is the size so the basics are quite familiar.

Hand held, 50mm, f3.5, 1/200, iso 6400. Resized and sharpened only pp done.

Here is a 100% crop.

Thanks Cameron. I just went in to have a look at it, liked it and when I asked how long the waiting list was (expecting something similar to the D800 when they came out) I was told they had 10 in stock, no waiting. Damn! No excuse. I just had to have it.

Just tried it out with a dx lens and it works fine. Just trim off the vignetting and its all good. There is plenty of resolution to play with.

Ahh a test bunny :)

So many questions... :)

As a fellow D7000 user looking at an upgrade I'd be interested in your thoughts on some more usability fronts
- how do you find the AF on the D600 (compared to D7000) - presumably it covers a smaller area of the overall frame
- if you try some compose and move focus point (e.g. for portraits) how does it fare?
- if you try some sports or quick action I'd be interested in your thoughts (coverage + speed vs D7000)
- whats the feeling on that centre mode dial lock button?
- does the D600 have the neat focal length relative AutoISO that the D800 has?

You should be able to set it up to either AUTO crop to DX in the menu, or even manual select to DX (put it into your "My Menu" or even slave it to a function key)....unless they get rid of that feature...that would suck though.

I'm guessing that by leaving the camera in "FX" mode that you actually get a larger picture area than the DX crop - you just have to manually crop in post to remove the vignetting.

Thanks for the tip Cameron. I haven't done too much reading of the manual yet.

Here is my dx test. I used the Sgma 10-20 set at 10mm.

Remorhaz ,,,, I've been called many things over the years but test bunny is a new one. Test dummy is more like it. :D

To try and answer your questions
- AF seems to be as as snappy if not a little faster. The etching on the viewfinder appears to be the same size so maybe a smaller area is covered.
- I haven't tried moving focal points yet.
- The fastest thing I've aimed at so far are the fishing boats.
- The mode dial lock button sucks big time. Why did they change something that was easy to use to be quite so clumsy.
- According to page 107 of the manual it does.

Hope thats helped you a bit. I'm still at the very early stages of learning. It feels very much like the D7000 but I like the profile of the handgrip better. I can grip the camera more comfortably. The difference in size is small and goes unnoticed in use. My experience so far is that speed-wise the D600 at least equals or betters D7000..
