Picture of the Week 14.03.2005This week's Picture of the Week is sirhc55's (Chris) Lonely Breakfast which can be found here (the original thread):
http://forum.d70users.com/viewtopic.php?p=41696 I loved the contrast, depth of field, and the overall sense of individuality I got form this one... it was almost like staring into someone elses life, as if you were watching from a crowd behind a plate of unbreakable glass, able to do nothing. It's a reminder, for me, that the D70 (with the help of Photoshop) is capable of reproducing images similar to what I would normally try to get out of some classic Agfapan film and some darkroom work... one more reason to drop the film cameras. I would love to know what everyone else thinks. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Good choice Leigh - once I got over my personal biases against black and white images, the shot is nicely captured. Depth of field is perfect - the person AND his table/chairs are in focus, with the rest thrown out to blown white.
The subject also wearing black/dark clothes adds to the bleakness and solidarity message from the picture.
This is my first view of this pic, and what a pic. I checked out the other thread and I like the clean one versus the grainy.
THe loneliness of this is exacerbated by his briefcase sitting alongside him. Like a faithful friend that can't tell a good joke or hold a conversation to save his life. And that black jacket sort of sheltering him. Thanks for posting this Chris, I find your work at the very least educational, and at the very most inspirational and a pleasure to look at.
Maybe I'm just being picky....
But could we have something on the frontpage link that shows the photo details ie. Author of the Photo. I remember the first time I saw POTW and I saw Author above the photo and thought that it was somebody else who took the shot. Oh, and great shot Chris. Love ya work. Keep it up. I sort of wondered what this shot would of been like from the side or the front, sipping on his coffee. Then thought that would take away from the mystery of the subject. Darryl (aka Kipper)

While that's a good idea, it's also quite a lot of work. As it is, the thumbs have to be created manually, and there's no way that we can easily coordinate the posting of the announcement message with the changeover of the thumbnail on the first page. So while I like the idea, you'll need to click through to the announcement to see the details. Sorry. g.

Well deserved Chris, There's always something enticing about your photos, so I'm sure this won't be the last picture of the week for you...
Looking forward to meeting you in person on Sunday... Cheers, John

Congratulations Chris. A worthy choice. Like all of your work this is of high quality and shows your keen eye for a good shot. I'd have walked straight past this gentleman and not even thought of pointing my camera at him

What a way to start the day
My thanks to Leigh for choosing my pic and my thanks to members of the forum for their kind words. I must say, that with the class of photos posted on this forum, I am truly chuffed and humbled at the same time. This forum has become like a second home - many of you are only known to me through postings but without you I feel there would be something lacking for me - thank you There are 6 people on this forum who deserve kudos: Gary and Leigh for starting a forum that has become like a drug to many of us. To Glen, Geoff and Greg for keeping us all under control, and last but not least, Birddog for making us all lust for the devices that will take us further into the wonderful hobby/business of photography. Thank you Chris

Excellent photo Chris, I like this a great deal. Even though it is probably some bloke having a pleasant time over a bit of toast and a coffee, it has a gritty and dramatic look to it.
Great choice Leigh. Greg - - - - D200 etc

Thanks Greg and you are probably right. This is the amazing thing about photography, you can show emotion even if it’s not really there!

There's no way he's having a pleasant time. Especially in the other thread with the grain. He's definitly tormented and has agonized for sometime over a lost loved one. Grain like that doesn't just appear on photos by a simple click of the keyboard...right?
I'm so glad this won pic of the week! I remember the first time I saw it, and thought....WOW!
Congrats, Chris! Well done for such a wonderful picture!
Picture of the weekLeigh should be congratulated for his excellent choice.
Chris ,I khow you claim to be a Londoner but I suspect there is a bit of French in you!!!!!! namely a ! Cartier-Bresson !! nice,NICE photo. NeoN
chris:
wonderful unconventional portait... makes you stare for a while and think about what this pic is telling the viewer congrats! p.s. mods: is there a thread that lists all the pervious winners? if not, that would be a kool thing to have. just my 2 cents
The PoW section of the forum will become a living archive of each week's choice, along with the comments and observations. g.

I think we're tied this week, especially with one of the newer ideas we're playing with... or rather I'm playing with. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Chris - You yourself have become an integral part of this forum and without YOUR contribution, it wouldn't be nearly the great 'place'' that is is. Congrats on your shot, and Leigh - great choice indeed. It's all been said prior to my msg of congrats but yeah, the sharpness and DOF really appeal to me most.. Gary said something of particular importance too, your photo really tells a story and encourages the viewer to consider what was going on at this 'moment' in time. Well done Chris!
Geoff.
