An interesting image, my problem with it is that
it seems to have two if not three subjects. I think
that the man should be the main subject and be in one
of the two thirds. It's a thought!

Street visions

Postby chrisk on Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:05 pm

UBuggered if I know cam. I waited for quite a while to get the shot I wanted which was just the girl in white, (or even a few women), in such an obscure position and right next to the "angel place" sign. Unfortunately that moment of isolation never came. The passerbys ruin the shot for me but I did like some elements of it. I'm starting to see things and learn thru failure after failure and practice so I'm pleased about that at least.

What I've also discovered is, just like landscapes, still life doesn't do it for me in street shooting. I need people or my hearts not in it.

My questions were really rhetorical, mainly what was running through my mind by viewing the image. But I do understand the frustration of having passersby ruining that fleeting moment....such is the life of street photography.

Great work again Chris. Is the B&W applied in camera? If yes, what film emulation are you generally using? Do you shoot JPEG or RAW?

Postby chrisk on Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:36 am

Yes, applied in camera and i shoot jpeg only. I use b&w red filter which gives more punch. I also crank up sharpening, wind down NR and a couple of other things I can't remember. lol

In post I use vignette2, 25 on the clarity slider, blacks -5, whites +10. Occasionally this preset won't cover everything so I have to individually play with an image but I prefer not to have to do any post at all.

Some great shots in this thread, I really enjoying taking the time to look at each of them in turn. Hard to pick a favourite - but the placement of the guy with the big issue, under the advertisement you couldn't plan that one any better. I really liked some of the more abstract ones too - the camera really seems to be the perfect tool for this kind of photography and makes me consider getting back into some street photography as well (which has been a very neglected genre for me). Great stuff please keep sharing the shots!

Thanks gents. It had been a couple of painful weeks traveling and prepping for board meetings etc so I haven't had a chance to get out and shoot for quite a while. Was wonderful to get back out there.

Craig, is that a brand of bike ? I've never heard of it before.

Yes Royal Enfield is a bike brand

OMG that wiki seems outdated as well!

Sorry I am so slow Chris, as Cameron said yes it is a brand of bike which used to be made in England but was resurrected as an Indian made unit.
It looks like the one you have shot is a late model classic from India.

It is a very good documentary set of photographs. On last three
additions:

The delivery scene and the ladies unsure whether to get in
or not makes a very interesting picture.

I also like the couple and I cannot make up my mind if they
just had a tiff or they are tired of shopping.

Love the one of the bike, the dof is perfect.

Chris just stumbled upon this thread and love these images, genuinely capturing a slice of the city. Are they taken at waist level with an articulating screen? In many of the images but in particular I notice Angel Place and Mates at the pub, the subjects seem totally oblivious to your presence.

Just out of interest Chris... what prompts the swap to Oly?
Photography is not a crime, but perhaps my abuse of artistic license is?

Thanks glen. These are a mixture of viewfinder, hip shooting, standing and sitting. The benefits of small inconspicuous cameras is people typically don't pay much attention to you.

Funny you mention the articulating screen cos that's one of the key reasons for me moving to the Olympus which partly answers mj's question.
