POTW 8-Oct-2013

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

POTW 8-Oct-2013

Postby aim54x on Tue Oct 08, 2013 8:33 am

There has been a flurry of images lately, and I am glad that to see pictures being posted by so many different members. However this meant that this week's task of choosing a POTW was not easy. There were three strong contenders for me. I do apologise if I have not commented much recently, I have to admit that I have been lurking.

Firstly there was Matt K's beautiful minmalism:

However the lack of symmetry in this photo tipped it out of favour, despite the rich blacks and stunning lines. This has to be one of the standout images from Matt's recent postings.

Next there was Greg's almost painted reed.

In both orientations it has great detail and a visual feast of tones and contrast.

However it has to be Chris K's Robber Fly that stole the show for me. Some may want more DOF, others may dislike the subject matter. But this image proves that once you get the eye's in focus (and the many eyes in this case) then the rest of the image falls into place. I am always partial to a good macro and this has great light and a lovely red-pink background that only accentuates the details.

Congrats Chris!

Superb photos and great choices, and despite the
fact I hate flies, all of them are winners.
