To branch or not to Branch

At some stage we always ask ourselves this very question.. ok maybe not

Anyway this particular image got me thinking (after Rodney had a did about the branch ) about what peoples preference would be in this instance, which do you prefere and why...does the branch add or detract from the frame?

I also think that the image works better without the branch. It is better balanced.

Branch off; otherwise the photo would require
serious cropping on the right as the water fall
is framed between the branch and the trunk of
the tree.

can I just say though that this is a spectacular image. I absolutely love it. love the angle, love the tree, love the colour and exposure. its brilliant mate...and that's coming from someone who regards most landscape photos with a big fat "meh".

phillip, you have certainly muddied the waters! thats actually a really nice idea for a crop with branch on the right of the frame, cheers mate.


Note, i actually preferred it with the branch in there, but i don't think there is any real logical reason for that except that was how the scene was...after looking at it quite a bit it does look better without teh branch.

Hi Robert - this was National Falls in the RNP

Note that this particular day was particularly Rodney-style time (not sure why it's my style since it's Gerry who decided we needed to go to the RNP at some ungodly hour )

I was up at 3:15AM, picked up Suren around 3:40AM and then Gerry at about 4AM for the trip down to RNP (arrived at Garie beach just before 5AM - sigh...)

RNP - awesome location - i have been down there a number of times by myself (against my better judgement probably) for sunrise at various locations..

if there is really is interest i can put up details of the next session down there - i rarely do that now since 1) not much interest here at dsrlusers and 2) i enjoy time by myself to do photography

fyi lots of good spots, just need to get to them drop me a PM if you need more info

Whattamola - great spot, if its pounding like this its pretty much a knee deep walk (waist deep when you hits a sand pocket) across the flow to get there but close to carpark.
