Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

Happy New Year to everybody! Photo of the Week is one of the forum's most popular items. The selection team has been broadened this year to instill some fresh ideas into PotW, so let's hope that the new selectors have plenty of images to sort through. For this week's selection, I have chosen the Brisbane cityscape posted by zafra52. Here is the link to that post: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=44123As a Brisbane native I am well aware of this Kangaroo Point vantage point, and I have quite a few images myself that have been taken here. It is usual to see them in colour, with early morning skies or evening shadows counterpointed by the CBD lights. In this image the photographer has done something different, and I have to say that I like the treatment. The square format and the B&W conversion give a quite stylised effect that seems to emphasise the architecture. As zafra has pointed out, there is also the contrast between a modern city and a paddlewheel steamer to attract the viewer's eye. Here is the image. Congratulations to zafra52.

Surely, for Brisbane, a paddlewheel steamer IS modern? Great image, and great selection, Trevor.

Congrats Zaf. Well deserved thats for sure. The simplicity of the image at first is really good but as you stare into the image your captured by it with so many contrasts of old and new. The quality of the image was def deserving of POW in my opinion.

Don't want to hijack the thread at all, but I thought it might be interesting to compare zafra's excellent B&W Photo of the Week with a colour version from a similar viewpoint. This image was taken 10 years ago with a Nikon D70 - remember them?

Thank you, Trevor. It's a lovely photo. It's interesting to see how the city skyline has gradually changed in 10 years.
