What I've been up to lately...

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

What I've been up to lately...

With my renewed vigor for photography here are some images taken over the last short while...

Taken in the Melb CBD on Moomba weekend:

And a couple more from yesterday afternoon.
I decided to play with some off-camera flash with a small home-made softbox that mounts to my SB800.
Shooting at 1/200 and F11-16 (to kill the bright ambient sunlight) I ran my speed light in manual mode (triggered via the in-built flash in commander mode) and held the camera with one hand and the speedlight/softbox in the other to light my subjects.
Lens used was the 50mm 1.8G.

I am loving the 50mm lens. It is so sharp. It has also helped fine tuning the AF on the D7000 for all my lenses.
I had noticed over Xmas when we were away on holidays that I'd taken some portrait shots of the kids and when I reviewed the images in Lightroom my son's ear was in focus (not his eye), which I specifically remembered focusing on. I then did some tests when we returned from holidays and found it was back-focusing quite alot (which apparently is a known issue with the D7000's). It's alot better now (probably not perfect, but close enough).

Great to see some images, I am in need of a new 50mm but I am contemplating the 50/1.4G, but congrats on the purchase and I am sure the AF fine tune will sort out any back focus issues.

Cheers, thanks Matt.

We were lucky enough to have a decent vantage point during the skiing and the wake sprayed up behind the skiers made for great photos (and made for some good panning practice).

Here's a few more from the series:

As Matt said, the second image of the first group is spectacularly good.
