Internet speed question

Coffs was an early adaptor town for the NBN. I have been hooked up to said service for several years but alas and alack, when you spend 8-9 months of every year on the road, it’s a fairly useless expense. As of last week I have ditched nbn and gone wireless as I can take the data with me.

This morning I tested my iPad download speed as follows: 80mbps upload - 5mbps download. Is this a reasonable speed? I think my nbn was only 25/12.( Last weekend it was 95mbps upload.)

Just wondering how fast other people on the forum attain. Thanks in advance.

Interesting question Ozi. And,one with many equally valid answers. I don't have NBN in Brisbane and I pay $69 a month to TPG for unlimited data and $500 worth of phone calls, which I never reach. my WiFi speed is 12 to 15Mbps download and 0.7 to 1.2 Mbps upload. We have 2 mobiles, 2 computers, 2 tablets, an Apple tv and a smart tv and normally 3 or4 gadgets are online without noticing too much delay.

Recently, we were house and dog sitting for a cousin and she had NBN installed at home, in a suburb of Brisbane, after a lot of trouble and her speed with Telstra is about 16 to 20 Mbps download with 1 to 2Mbps upload. She has only a computer and a mobile phone of her own. Neither I or my partner noticed a mayor difference in Internet performance. However, last December and early January we visited Spain and stayed with my family and the WiFi there was 300Mbps and I believe they are now starting the upgrades for 600Mbps, and you could definitely notice the difference then. Specifically, when downloading phone and computer operating systems and software upgrades.

Now, when I have to install the NBN, I will have no choice for I live in an apartment, I will try to go for a package with at least double or triple of what I currently get. But, it all depends on how many devices are online and the nature of your downloads or uploads. I believe TPG is developing now its own network which will put to shame the NBN, but we will see if it only serves big cities.

I don't know if this helps, but 80Mbps download and 5Mbps upload will be the envy of most users in Australia, including business. Australians are paying through their nose for an outdated technology and bad service, thanks to bad policy and bad telcos.

Interesting post Zaffs and many thanks. It seems the deal I got with Optus seems reasonable. I’m not a power user but the speed seems quite good. Of course that depends on where you are at any particular moment.

i think you have the speeds the wrong way around... that said if you gettign that speed on mobile then your on a cracking deal...with your NBN connection it all depends on the plan, whilst it can be super fast its also throttled

$70 per month for 200GB data. Which I’ll never use as I’m not a movie watcher but it’s nice to have anyway.
