Dad's HandsD70 with Nikkor 50mm ISO 400 F2.8@1/100sec Last edited by AlistairF on Sat Mar 19, 2005 1:40 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Only 2 things hold this back from being perfect for me; the unbalanced background- dark to light, and those fingernails ! (dad's, that is). Otherwise, please can you share your technique for B&W conversion, the contrast is lovely.
Pete
There are 10 kinds of people in this world; those who understand binary, and those who don't
Yes, dad's fingernails are disgusting (not mine thankfully!). But that's how the moment was captured. I actually like the diagonal contrast as it adds balance.
As for B&W technique, check out http://forum.d70users.com/viewtopic.php?t=1957 Alistair
I love it.
Delightfully simple, and very emotionally stirring to me. It actually brings back memories of when Leigh was born. As to the fingernails, they only add to this image for me. Not every person is perfect, and that's how it is. g.

Yep, those nails are not perfect, they are his and that gives the pic a special familiale quality that distinguishes it from another pic you might see in a magazine ad or postered in a female college dorm room or something. It's an absolute terrific picture. Can't wait to see more of your stuff.
Dave - in this shot you have emulated the great Rodin to good effect. I really like everything about this shot. Just realised it’s not a landscape
Actually I am wrong, it is a landscape of emotion. . . Chris

Alastair,
I think its a terrific shot. And I'm rather upset, because that is exactly the idea I was playing with for the new challange. THat my friend is exrtremely uncanny. I've already taken some test shots on different backgrounds and diffrent hands/feet combos. Nice one Matt
AlistairF, WOW
Absolutely Jam Packed Emotional, what more can I say. Well done, what was your camera settings. Mic.
Mic, I white balanced with a grey card and used the white-wedding curve with moderate color saturation. The shot was natual light taken near a window. Alistair
Thanks for asking Mic, I realised when looking at the EXIF that I was using my 50mm 1.4. I've updated the original post with the info. Alistair
Alistair, this is just beautiful! I have tried on numerous occasions to capture something like this in B&W of my children's hands, but did not quite capture what you have here! I also tried with feet, but they wriggled around too much, and when they were sleeping, they would all be covered up!
This is pure magical, I love it! Once I scan my B&W film pics, I will posts them in the Film and Non Digital section for people to critique, but it may take a few days! This is just wonderful!
This image is one of the best I have seen on this forum........ you have set a bench mark for yourself.......... well done
Cheers ....bp....

Sigh, looks like I'm the only one that can't view it
Seems like some sites block 59.x.x.x addresses, which is what I have. Guess I'll speak to internode, who will speak to your hosting provider Darryl (aka Kipper)

Great shot Allistair. See a lot of photos like this for baby work. Mainly either of the hands or feet. But this has a nice touch showing the size comparison between Dad's hands and the Baby's feet.

Thanks for the kind remarks. The blown highlights work to my advantage when I printed it on archival art paper. the tones fade away into the paper colour. I wish I could show you all how well the Epson R800 does B&W on a good matte paper, the screen images does not do justice compared to printed images. Maybe I'll bring some paper output to the next Melbourne meet. Alistair
Wait for the R1800 to come out (already in USA). It's the A3+ version of the R800 and better print quality that the 2100.
R1800 will be released next month in the US!, price in Australia is than 1k if released to this market. Nothing annouced by Epson Australia yet, bear in mind some products may not available in Australia as Epson P-2000 or Epson 2200. Some products targeted North America or Europe and we're Down Under they may forget or not include us in their list So wait until we hear from Epson Australia. Birddog114
