Very close, 2.5-3M. It was next to a wooden tressle walkway through a wetland. Sunning itself, after my heart exploding and taking shots as quickly as the D70 could take (not quick enough for my liking, could of done with the D2X) I turned around and quickly told everyone coming "There's a snake up there beside the track". The first person I came across was a young couple with their 3yo.
Ok just realised I had my monitor brightness at 100% which I think it should be at 75% when I calibrated it. So just +EV about 0.25 to 0.5 and applied a USM after the image resize. What do you think?  Last edited by kipper on Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Tah, I actually spotted it a fair distance off because I was looking for subjects which were birds. Then I was looking at the track and thinking to myself "hmmm a bit overgrown, and it's quite cool but has sun. Bet there will be snakes sunning themselves". Get around the corner and go "Uh oh!".
I use to be on the look out for snakes quite a bit when I used to do Freshwater Fishing up at Buxton. Saw a few snakes up there. Unfortunately the aperture selected wasn't the best. Probably should of gone about F5.6-F8. However I didn't really have time to adjust at that range. I just shot and got the hell out of dodge. Suprising the bugger didn't get startled by the shutter release. Darryl (aka Kipper)

Yeah I know they're fairly ok if you don't aggrevate the shit out of em. Friend of mine who I stayed with said the only time he's been chased by a Tiger Snake was when it was coiled up and he started to throw golfballs at it
Length not sure, because it was coiled up. I don't think it would of appreciated me uncoiling it to measure it
But judging by the headsize, and after discussing it with my friend we sort of think it was probably a young adult. It's head wasn't that big probably 1.5 times the width of my thumb and about the length. Darryl (aka Kipper)

From what I hear the Tiger Snakes are willing and agressive enough to have a go or several ! Great shot , frame the snake ! Cheers CD
I was bitten by a mulga snake in QLD a few years ago (about 20yrs) during a lone bushwalk. I applied a compression bandage (sock) and walked casually the five klms back to my car and drove myself to Rockhampton hospital about 50 klms away. The bite stung like buggery but i was fine and only stayed there a few hours after the antivenom stuff was given to me.
Fortunately it wasn't a tiger snake otherwise i might have been not so lucky. Yours is a very healthy looking specimen and i doubt i would have taken a photo of it. Great shot though especially as it's wild. Well done.Steve.

In some Asian countries as Thailand, Vietnam, China, HongKong, Cobra Snake is sold live in many restaurants with 7 courses meal.
One medium size Cobra can serve a table of ten people, I had them several times while back when I was in the military, and in the market, you can see them sold in bulk and in a big pail, especially during the flood season, the Cobras gone up to the high dry area and it's time for people catch and sold them in the market. They ain't cheap. Birddog114

ChristianD, that is what my father thought as well. However the person that I stayed with is a bit of a country lad and reckons they will only attack if provoked. Then again he can be a bit full of shit at times and probably thinks he knows everything.

Hi Birddog,
I've seen the Cobras in HongKong. Restaurants with snake cages full of cobras. I believe the cobra blood has a potency improving role in China. Well I guess it is okay if you bite the snake, however the other way around, if the snake bites you, it turns into a big emergency. I've read an article about a woman who was bitten by a brown snake and it was a yourney, lots of unpleasant things happening to the body and the task of trying to stay alive ! please pm me if my "orders" are "weighing you down" Cheers CD
