D70Users Share a Spyder Programme...Hi all,
At the last Sydney mini-meet, Glen & I were chatting about Spyders and whether it might be a good idea to share one amongst members. You only need to calibrate your monitor infrequently and it really doesn't make sense for us all to buy our own Spyder... Is anyone interested in buying a shared Spyder??? It could be swapped around at Sydney mini-meets, or it could be picked up from whoever has it in his / her possession (logged in a thread here). Depending on how many people are interested in participating in this, we may set up a couple of Spyder-cells (e.g. North of Harbour, South of Harbour)... If this seems like a good idea and you might like to participate then register your interest here... Depending on how many people are interested, we will then decide how many units to buy and which model to buy... You are not committing yourself by expressing an interest... Let me know what your maximum $ amount is and which model of Spyder you would prefer... Cheers, John

Count me in for Belmore's cell and Spyder 2 and will lay out $150.00.
I want two units one for share and one for stock, but where and how do you buy them? Last edited by birddog114 on Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.

This is a great idea, and well why does everyone need there own when we can share things, hey i think some prices some of these companies want are silly and well i belive in sharing if possible and well we all have the interenet, why did we get it? to learn, download, share files etc...
Ok if you run a business, you need the to have ridgy didge software if you are using it other wise can get in the poo so to speak, but yeh how many here actually buy all there programs and if it was available on the net for free what would you do? It's like buying a video recorder to tape your favorite tv show that you are not suposed to do even cdr and dvdr drives. So yes great idea either put in and buy it and share it or if you already have or anything to share why not. When i was at the radio station i would spend money on a cd for 1 song and the rest was crap so when i discovered mp3s on the net many years ago i have not brought a cd for 1 song, i just found it and downloaded it. Anyhow good idea john Cheers D3,D2x,D70,18-70 kit lens,Sigma 70-200mm F2.8EX HSM,Nikon AF-I 300m F2.8, TC20E 2X

Perhaps we could all throw in a few bucks each for Chris as rental and share it amongst members around the Sydney basin? We could open a special post dedicated to the subject and sort out the logistics from there? Interested members could be given say 2 weeks to register, and a relay type system could be sorted???
Gary are you there? Can this be arranged? This is obviously dependent on Chris's feelings towards the task. It sounds like a few plp are interested so Chris don't be afraid to say "NO" or name a price. Maybe a one off total or perhaps a price per member/user. Just an idea. Or maybe I'm thinking too much? I know nutzinc
Might take you up on that after my two weeks of holidays. What suburb do you reside in? (I'm in The Junction). I presume the whole calibration process doesn't take long? What are the real differences between these calibration tools btw? Ie Spyder 1, 2, ColorPlus? Last edited by pippin88 on Thu Apr 07, 2005 1:12 am, edited 1 time in total.

Nick I'm in North Lambton. Differences between the different versions (other than price) is I think the Spyder2 has a little more functionality & some better software. Calibration takes about 5 minutes. Peter

Thanks birddog - not superseded, just cheaper (well it was at the time - paid US$99 I think @ Adorama vs about US$280 for Spyder2) Peter

Marcus - I am more than willing to lend the Spyder out to any Sydney forum member for FREE, so long as they are willing to pick up and return to me as I am not that mobile. Chris

Im in desperate need of calibrating my LCD monitor.
Happy to take up any offers for borrowing someones kit! JD
I will also point something out, sirhc55 uses his in the course of his business, so lets not have just his missing for weeks at a time, lets share the wear between a number of units, maybe one Northisde and one Southside. Generous offer MCWB.
As previously posted I can cover Westside Andrew
Nikon D3 and lot's of Nikon stuff!!
I just want to have a unit to share with members, though I don't need it, my Misubishi 21" is doing well with the prints on the Epson 2100, and soon the Epson R1800.
I'll buy a unit and keep it here for members who comes to the mini meet can do the calibration of their laptop. Birddog114

boo hoo!
Weekends are pretty much a right off for me for the next few months... work is having me take mon / tues' off instead JD?
Absolutely agree Glen... There is obviously a lot of interest in this and it was not my intention to make people feel obliged to lend their units out... Once or twice may be fine, but after that we need to consider wear & tear on the unit and inconvenience to the owner... If the people who have offered to lend want to restrospectively sell their units back to the group, or want to consider a hire charge I would be ok with that... Otherwise, I think we should look to buy a couple of new units that are purely meant for this purpose... Cheers, John

leek,
I have your say in my previously post. I can only loan to people who can make a commitment return it within few days, though my unit will be on standby for the benefits of other members at the mini meets. Birddog114

Hmmm..
John I bought my unit for my use with no expectation of recovering the cost from others. It sits idle in its box 99% of the time. I'm more than happy to lend it for free to someone who returns it within a reasonable timeframe (days). I guess I'd feel a little guilty trying to charge a forum member for use of something I'd already justified the cost for to myself. Peter

Joolz, I'd be keen to take you up on this offer. I'm in Ivanhoe and work at Southbank. I can collect and return if this works for you. Are you going to the 17 April Melbourne meet? I actually suggested this idea of a shared spyder a while ago but got no bites in Melbourne. Cheers Dean I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

It seems that a quite a few members already have a Spyder. How about simply hiring from these members so they can recoup their costs? At say... $15 for a 3 day turn around then the members who have taken the plunge should see a well deserved return on their investment? If each member calibrates his gear 3 times a year and you get 5 people hiring then at the very least the owners could upgrade their Spyders every 2 years or so for a new model.
Regards
Matt. K
