I liked this article, new to me

I was browsing Luminous Landscape tonight and found this article, about his trip to Bangladesh.

I'd not seen it before, but I assume that some of you may have. Sorry if this is old news here....

Anyway, I found it very interesting because his needs for the trip were mostly fulfilled with a less than sterling canon 70-300 IS lens. The much maligned 80-400 Nikkor is the equivalent for Nikon, along with the Sigma 80-400 OS.

He also made other points that I found interesting. For instance, his "keeper" rate was 1.5%. I'm sure that a ton of his tossers were better than what I can do, but still, the averages aren't far from what we discussed a couple of days ago.

Another thing was that he used the 1dsMkII 16mp camera over the 20d, because of cropping and, of course, resolution.

I've so often seen the arguments that 6 to 8mp is more than enough for Joe Average photographer, and that the megapixel race is just marketing hype, that I almost get physically ill when I see them.

In my little corner of the world, the d70 is a wonder camera, but I've lost so many shots because of my inability to properly frame the subject the way I want it. I think that is the reality with most amateurs. It seems that the pros have the same issues... If I could have 12 to 16mp to "pad" my poor ability to frame shots on animals, people and moving subjects, my keeper rate would greatly benefit.

I'm gonna remember that page and cheer when 12 to 16 or more megapixels become consumer items. Of course, 10gig CF cards better come with them.....

Though neither is criticised:
The D2X comes out on top. The article states that the D2X provides more resolution with 12.4 MP than the 1 Ds Mk II does with 16.7 MP. "The authors conclude that "internal signal processing is more important than pixel count or sensor size".

That last comment, Birdy, is one of the most intelligent things I've ever seen put up about the megapixel-marketing war... if only because it's incredibly accurate.

It's like the age old (well... not that old) argument between computer junkies about faster chips... and that it doesn't come down to chip speed, but rather chip architecture (that's how you separate the lamers and newbies from the people who know their shit. )

The other things with bigger Mp images (particularly for those of us who are strictly amateurs) are storage (on CF cards, and PSDs, and archiving on HDD and DVD/CD), transfer times, handling files on the computer (opening times, processing times) and so on.

I certainly agree that there are many benefits with large Mp images, but for me, I find the 6 Mp is the perfect balance between quality and usability.

(Of course, when the Pentium 5 2000 Ghz with a 5 Terrabyte HDD is commonplace, I might review )

I'm surprised Cannon Photographers can even see through the Eyepiece, their Ego's and heads being that large.

One day. One day I'll get a high end Nikon.

Correct! I can tell it by myself, and with the Nikkor Noct 58/f1.2 or the AIS 50/f1.2 (I've just got)

I'm fall back to the rare manual, fast lenses in the 70, 80.

I'm "drool" the Repro Nikkor 85mm F1.0 Supersonic Macro Lens . Have to get it, yes I'll one day near.
